Early Access Video: The new kit from Compass Rose

Friends:

Why don't I have dogs or dog holes on my workbench? Because I use bench hooks! (And a planing stop). You can make bench hooks, but beginners might find the project a little challenging.

So today, we're releasing our newest kit: the Compass Rose Sawyer's Hooks. This bench hook kit is CNC machined from cabinet-grade plywood and you assemble them with dowels in pore-drilled holes. It couldn't be easier.

If you would like a perfectly straight and square set of bench hooks that you can make in a few minutes, we're offering exclusive early access and an exclusive Patron discount until Wednesday.

Here's the link to the A-stock:

And here's the link to the B-stock (same tool; minor cosmetic blemishes):

The B-stock costs a little less and looks a little rougher, but they work just the same.

And the Assembly Guide is here. It's got all the free plans and instructions.

Thanks so much for supporting Compass Rose and for being here to support this content. Next week, we wrap up the Craftsman Table!

Happy Saturday!

I was ready to order but find that CR does not ship to mainland Europe. It isn't Russia yet, Rex!

Maarten Niele

I'm going back and watching your videos in order, but from day of forward. I just got to your video diversion from making your kitchen cabinet. Seeing this video hit me that you could do for the miter kit what you did for the sawyer hooks. CNC bases, doweled for assembly, then have the customer use their saw to cut the scribed angles in the fence. You could even make the polymer guide blocks to add to the fence. Just an idea of a complimentary product for the line.

Considering my laziness and inaccuracy, and wanting to show support, this is a no brainer. Ordered. And as a lefty, it works the same for me.

Cory

I guess it boils down to what brings you joy. In other words, do you primarily want to be a teacher/YouTuber, or do you want to be a designer/manufacturer. If the former, I would guess you could for some sort of a partnership with a CNC shop to batch out product. And maybe just get a small machine for development and prototyping?

Brian Taylor

Well, we appreciate that very much! You really are supporting the growth of a new company.

Rex Krueger

Fantastic! It doesn't cost us anything to give out the plans and our theory is that anyone who CAN build these should. We don't want your money if you can do it yourself.

Rex Krueger

Man, those Hayward books are solid gold! The man was a genius.

Rex Krueger

yay!

Kenneth Carlile

We will have some replacement covers available. In fact, i need to check on that.

Rex Krueger

We really put a lot of thought into this one. They work well. Thanks for noticing.

Rex Krueger

Yeah, it's hard to avoid that "commercial" sound when you're selling something.

Rex Krueger

That's a fine tip!

Rex Krueger

Wow, you've explained the logic of these tools perfectly. They're made to save time (and maybe even money) for the new woodworker. I was afraid people wouldn't like the price (we really can't charge any less) so your comments are appreciated!

Rex Krueger

A perfectly fair criticism.

Rex Krueger

Sales are good so far, but I expect most people here can make their own. The real test comes on Wednesday when the video goes "live".

Rex Krueger

Good luck with that move!

Rex Krueger

Thank you! I appreciate that.

Rex Krueger

I know John, so that's possible, but his location in CA is less than ideal.

Rex Krueger

You're very welcome! I bet many of the Patrons will just make their own.

Rex Krueger

Boy is that a can of worms. The short version is that we really do need a full-size machine to get good prices on stock and to be efficient. We've priced these out and it looks like 30-50k. On top of that, I need to hire someone to run it....and then it's making noise while I'm filming, sooooooo yeah. Lots of issues there.

Rex Krueger

Just that you use them for sawing and we wanted a name with a little more pop than "bench-hook," which might be the most boring name ever.

Rex Krueger

Thanks Rex my order is in, yes I could build but supporting a creator is also important to me.

Wayne

When I saw the beginning of this, my first thought was "maybe I could make these", but when I saw that you included plans to make them, my second thought was "anyone who is open enough to include plans to make them yourself deserves support", so I am buying!

Joseph Vaughan

I agree I like this format. I also did a quick Google and Laguna makes a 2x4 at $6k. 250x35= $8750. Hmm. Still have to pay someone to feed it, buy quality materials. Would it hold up to 300 of these?

Meryl Logue

Excellent bench hook. I have saw jig. I used from a Charles Hayward book. My first one lasted 2 years. I have always wanted to try the old school way. Maybe after almost 4 years it's about time I try.

Dan Delie

Hmm... I'm sorely tempted. You could probably push me over the edge if I could get a new ready-set planing stop cover in my order. ;) < /greedy >

Kenneth Carlile

Yay, shooting mode of the hook = hook for lefties

Stuart

After you came up with a fourth use for those hooks I thought you’d say “and just for four easy payments of $19.95 you can have these wonder tools shipped to your very own home. Call 1-800-Get a Tool. Operators are standing by” Seriously, a really nice tool. I hope you can make it in volume.

Richard C von Brecht

Great shop fixture! If you needed precise length cuts you could mark the work with a marking knife, knock that little chamfer to the knife score, and then shoot them to the score...should be able to get very close to perfect. Keep the videos coming, they really make my Saturday mornings;)

John Griswold

So $35 a wack…I made two I don’t remember how long age after watching Roy Underhill make a pair on Woodwright shop. I learned how to sharpen my saw because of this project. By the time I paired and planed the surfaces mostly flat, I probably had 20 hours into them and they were not square. Even at minimum wage, 35 bucks is a good deal for the new woodworker. As I looked at the again today, I also realized they are not the same thickness and both are twisted. I did take time to square them up a few years back. I see at least another dozen hours or work, or, I could buy Rex’s set!

Chris St. Cyr

... so the apron won't get in the way... Why I don't like aprons on my bench.

Jim Weisgram

Well presented. Good offering that isn't readily on the market. I'm curious to see how many of these you sell.

GFHWoodWerks (Gregory)

Those are fantastic and if I weren’t all packed to move to Portugal in 3 weeks I would consider getting them. Thanks for offering the plans as they will probably be my first bench tools when I finally can get back to making things again!

Gerald Eddy

Well done and good luck finding a supplier

Dave West

I'm not sure it's sawyer as in Tom, I think it's sawyer like saw+yer one who saws. Like Bowyer is one who makes bows. Maybe not though :P

Sam Bender II

Have you talked with Katz-Moses? He does CNC fulfillment for a lot of other YouTube woodworkers

Brian Capaldo

Nice addition to my hand tool bench. Since I have two CNC machines, I'll make my own set. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing your next idea. Thanks for the free guide.

Skully Wood and Metal

I like this format of announcement! 2 suggestions, not for improvement but just possible direction: - How about a premium version in hardwood, like oak? - Do you have room/budget/interest in getting your own CNC machine? You wouldn't have to get a full 4'x8' table, maybe just 1/4 sheet size.

Brian Taylor

Very nice tool, Rex. Thank you for making it. Is there any significance in the name Sawyer's Hooks?
