Early Access Video: Craftsman Table Pt3

Friends:

It's been a long road (much longer than expected), but our "live" build of the Craftsman Table has finally come to an end. In this part, I make a perfectly round top using only standard tools; not even a coping saw! It's easier than it looks, but it's not quick. Even I yearned for the bandsaw by the end.

We also tidy up and assemble the finished table.

As usual, the plans are being drafted now and they'll be available for FREE on Wednesday.

I'm also happy to report the Rob is coming to the shop tomorrow and we're going to shoot the next part in the Alexander Chair build. It should be a lot of fun and we'll have a video for you.

Finally, thanks for making the launch of the Compass Rose Sawyer's Hooks such a success! We've already sold more than half our stock and we're well on the way to selling out. I could never do it without all of you. Thanks.

Happy Saturday!

Early Access Video: Craftsman Table Pt3

Comments

Paul has a new VLOG out. Says he is 100% now.

Chris St. Cyr

Great video and table. You asked what furniture piece would be nice to build, well here is my thought. Ideally, you should build something you need in your home or something someone else would that you would gift to. A suggestion though might be an end table with a drawer, a hall table, or a TV stand. I like the multiple episode longer format build. If you run into a series being longer than 4 videos it might make sense to have two release in a week, if there are more than 4. If there are 6 in the series then maybe 2 the first and 2 the last as an example. I would still keep them roughly the length you did in this series. Lastly, I think it would be really cool to add a design video with the project. I admit that I'm biased and love build videos and the longer format gives the viewer something to come back for the next week.

Yeah, I would want black or brass/bronze...

John Griswold

I'm delighted. Thanks for making it possible!

Rex Krueger

You're entirely right! Keeping the proportion is essential.

Rex Krueger

If you can find a nice head, sheet-metal screws are threaded perfectly for wood. I guess that's an option, but I haven't seen them with a head I really like.

Rex Krueger

I think you'll do great. It's not super difficult.

Rex Krueger

Even brass plated might be okay. They would be stronger.

Rex Krueger

I think Paul is recovering, but I only hear what everyone else hears.

Rex Krueger

I'm delighted that you like it!

Rex Krueger

It's my pleasure. Thanks for watching!

I think you might struggle to drive cut nails into a project this delicate. When i think about all that force and where it needs to go, I could imagine you snapping a leg. I vastly prefer cut nails, but screws might be the fastener for this project.

Rex Krueger

You're right and I need to do more!

Rex Krueger

Thanks Rex. I really enjoyed this series.

Mike

That came out really nice Rex. I really like this approach to the videos. I recall some watchers asked about making this table taller. I was thinking that if you make it taller, change the diameter of the table to maintain the golden ratio with the height being about 1.62 times the diameter. I think this would help maintain stability of the table. Thank you as always for another great furniture build.

Matt Evans-Koch

Another great video to watch with my Saturday breakfast! The pan head, wood thread, slotted brass screws seem to be hen's teeth...I have had success with machine thread screws in hardwood tapped to the appropriate thread size, and these are available online, Mcmaster-Carr is a great source for all things hardware. A little glue on the machine threads makes an even more solid connection;)

John Griswold

Looks nice. Can't wait to try my hand at this!

Bradley Barth

That does look like a great little table, even if the vintage screws were more difficult to find. I've found it possible to get brass screws on Amazon, although you gotta be careful there not brass plated lol :)

Jim

Well done. It's nice you spread the build out, helps to digest the info. I hope Paul is OK as well.

Kevin S Thomas

Great build series Rex. Thanks

Chris St. Cyr

I pick up new things in every video. Thanks Rex

Chris DuCasse

I kept thinking that regular nails or cut nails would have been good in this project as well. What do you think? Am I overlooking some reason to prefer screws for this build? Not a criticism in any way, but you are the one who taught me about cut nails, so I always have them top of mind when I watch your content. Love this build!

Nathan Welsh

Thanks Rex, it's been a while since you made some furniture.
