Patron Version Video: The Father's Day Tool Tote

Friends:

It’s just about Father’s Day and we’re celebrating with a special project!

I found a great traditional tool tote and I’ve recreated it so you can make it with your Dad, make it for your Dad, or maybe you are the Dad and you want to make it with your kid. No matter how you want to make it, we’ve got you covered. This full build video covers all the details and we’ve done it in the longer “live build” format that you all prefer.

We’re also having a big Father’s Day sale over at Compass Rose and we’re doing a special sale just for Patrons on exclusive products:

Get a Hand Tool Hero International Edition (regularly $37) for just $20: https://tinyurl.com/aubeycrh

Get a Patron Scholar Edition Card Scraper (Regularly $16) for just $12: https://tinyurl.com/5epezas7

These two tools are only for Patrons and they are invisible to the public.

And you can check out our regular products, also on sale.

Hand Tool Hero Standard Edition (regularly $37) is now $29: https://tinyurl.com/3ec82duh

No-Mod Planing Stop (regularly $37) is now $34: https://tinyurl.com/2btt7hjj

Router Plane Blade Set with 1/2” and 1/4" blades (regularly $39) is now $15: https://tinyurl.com/4b8zkp9d

Ready-Set Planing Stop (regularly $14.99) is now $13.99: https://tinyurl.com/4d88hxa5

Finally, our standard full-color plans will be available to everyone later this week, but I want the Patrons to have early access to everything, so I’m including the construction drawings that I used to make my tote. These drawings are just for Patrons and they’re attached to this post. These drawings don’t have a ton of detail, but they will get you started if you just can’t wait.

So, Happy Father’s Day from all of us. We hope you have a great day!

Rex, as you are no doubt already aware, this is a version of the tote popularized by Roy Unerhill. I did a bit a research into its design some time back, and the earliest reference Ito it I could find appears in Samuel Blackburn's 1915 book "Problems in Farm Woodwork". Blackburn notes that the carrier was designed to "easily slide under the seat of a buggy".

Alex R

Great build Rex. Thanx. Happy Father's Day to you and yours.

Greg Preston

No, I haven't posted any of it on the forum yet. Wasn't sure how I felt about the whole thing but now that the first one is getting closer to being complete I'm feeling good about it. I guess I was kinda waiting to see how everything went before I posted anything on it. I do have pics so I'll probably post them now on the forum and I'll be sure to tag you in if I can figure out how to do that. Lol

Jennessa Lynam

I thought the same thing watching this video. I have a feeling that gardeners in my life might be getting one in the future.

GFHWoodWerks (Gregory)

Yup, that is correct. Also, those are just the basic construction drawings. You have to take those with a grain of salt. We drew them before I had cut the first piece of wood. Some things are probably not perfect. The "official" plans are nearly done and they should be up today or tomorrow.

I was really delighted by the design of this tote when I first saw it. It was buried under a bunch of crap and we had to dig it out. As soon as i saw that straight side, I knew I had to build it.

Rex Krueger

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

Rex Krueger

Wow! Dovetailed guitar cases! Are you posting about that on the forum? Can you tag me in?

Rex Krueger

I'm glad you liked it!

Rex Krueger

Yup, Nate is the one who turned spelch into such a great joke. He gets all the credit. It's funny. I met my wife because she needed help hanging pictures in her apartment...but my daughter won't need that help.

Rex Krueger

You too! Thank you1

Rex Krueger

I feel like almost everyone can use a tool tote. I could see a painter using it. Really anyone who needs to move a handful of tools around.

Rex Krueger

I'm glad you liked it!

Rex Krueger

Back at you!

Rex Krueger

Man, countries of the world need to get together and pick a day to celebrate Dads!

Rex Krueger

Honestly, i didn't even realize that I said "spelching" so many times. Nate turned it into a joke. He's good that way.

Rex Krueger

Really? I had no idea. I truly must learn more about the motherland!

Rex Krueger

The plans included seem off? when you put the sides on the back, which has an angle on each end, the bottom has an angle that needs to be planed down the entire length. Is that correct?

Marc Barash

Great project, great video. Instantly one of my all-time favorite Rex-videos. The asymetrical design is such a cool feature! Happy Fathers Day to all

Helge

Great project Rex.

Chris St. Cyr

I've been wanting to build a tool tote to go on the inside of a wooden toolbox I restored and this video will help me a bunch when I actually have time to build it at some point. I recently was hired to build some guitar cases. I used dovetails for the joinery. I've only built one so far but I'll be building 2 more after I finish the first one which will be pretty soon. Thanks, Rex and Happy Father's Day!

Jennessa Lynam

Thanks Rex. The tote came out great. Happy Father's day!

Dan Delie

Rex, you don’t happen to know my son? Absolutely everything we do together results in an argument. Did Nate come up with Spelch? It is a real term but he sure pushed the special effects hard on that one. Your tribute to your dad was beyond great. It caused me to reflect on my time with mine. It’s great to hear that you are teaching your daughter life skills. I raised mine to be independent and not to be helpless. (However, she still won’t pickup a dead roach inside her own house!)

Richard C von Brecht

Thank Rex, I never realized you've met my dad :). Also be careful that you don't spelch yourself in public. It's ssooo embarrassing. Have a great father's day

Dave West

This would be a great accessory for a gardener...all those trowels and clippers and gloves and spritzers that end up scattered in various places on the ground. A Mother's day present for next year, and even an opportunity to do some crafty floral painting;)

John Griswold

Thanks! Great tote and great sentiment! Happy Father’s Day!

Gerald Eddy

Thanks Rex and Happy Fathers Day to you!

Marc Barash

In Denmark Father's day was three days ago on the fifth :^)

Thomas Hverring

Lovely how you worked speeching in a often as you could. This would make a wonderful tote for so many things.

GFHWoodWerks (Gregory)

Hmmm. But Father's Day is almost a year away?!? ;-) In Germany, Father's Day is on Feast of the Ascension.
