Exclusive Video: Shaker Table Pt 11.

Friends:

We're up to Part 11 in this build and it's time to put some practice in! In today's video, we're going to chop a mortise in a relaxed and low-pressure way. If you've never cut one before, this is great time to get started. If you're experienced with this joint, feel free to add your tips in the comments.

Next week, we'll take the same approach to cutting a tenon!

My thought is that I'd rather bruise the wood than my finger... ;) Perhaps a dowel or something to lever against?

Kenneth Carlile

I'm new here and missed the previous videos in the series. Are they available?

I am a amateur like many others here but I feel that one early experience qualifies me to add a tip !! Always check that you are cutting a mortise in the correct place! The best mortise I have cut so far was between the wrong marking gauge lines so that the wood was in the wrong orientation! Good luck all 😜

That's the same way I do my mortises but they don't come out looking as good probably cause I use a bench chisel and not a mortise chisel. I've been wanting to get a couple but haven't had the money to get any. Hopefully I can change that soon. Thanks, Rex.

I am not even following along with the build, but I enjoy this series so much! The forum, the free plans, and bonus content like this would all be worth the patronage on their own imho. Any chance you´ll do a build-along again next year? any chance we´ll get an AMA after this one is finished (would completely understand if that is not your thing, just asking)

For years, I thought there was only one right way to cut mortises, the method of working away from the middle. I’ve learned the method doesn’t matter as long as you end up with a rectangular hole that is the right size!

Chris St. Cyr

And I bet I could learn a thing or two from you!

My pleasure!

Cool, thanks for the tips

I have cut a number of mortices ( no expert tho) but its always good to hear someone else’s perspective and I felt I got a lot out of hearing yours!
