New Tool: Early, Exclusive, Discounted.

Friends:

Compass Rose is getting ready for the Summer Slump, that time of year when people don’t do woodworking because they’re outside hiking or playing frisbee. People aren’t in the shop and they don’t buy tools in the summer.

As we get ready to go dark for a couple of months, we have one last offering. Compass Rose now has knobs and totes for Stanley handplanes. We know that replacement handles can be a real pain when you’re restoring that flea-market find, so we set out to make affordable options that drop straight in.

Our knobs and totes are 3D printed from PETG, the same material as our Vise Block. They’re durable, smooth and comfortable. The printing process does leave a tiny seam on one side, but I can’t even feel it.

I’ve had these exact handles on my No. 5 for the last 6 months. They feel great and they look great.

This is a low-key release, so no video, no splashy launch. We’re just putting them up and seeing what happens. For Patrons, we’d like to offer our customary early access and discount. It’s just a dollar off each, but these handles are already very affordable.

The tote is here.

The knob is here.

As usual, these are invisible to the public and only Patrons can buy them for the next week. James Wright used these handles on a new specialty tool that he’s introducing next weekend, so go check out his channel on Sunday the 18th.

Please note: the Quick Tote fits Stanley models 4 ½, 5, 5 ½, 6, 7 and 8, but not 5 ¼, which takes a #3 tote. We do not currently offer Quick Handles for sizes smaller than #5, but we’re working on handles for the #4 and they should be available soon. The Quick Tote will fit Stanley planes from any era and should fit most equivalent planes made by companies like Miller’s Falls and Sargent.

The Quick High Knob fits Stanley models 4 ½, 5, 5 ½, 6, 7 and 8, but not 5 ¼, which takes a #3 knob. The High Knob is found on planes made after 1919 and fits most planes Type 12 and later. If you don’t know which knob you need, measure the mounting post. If the mounting post is 2 ½” (64mm) long, then it’s a high knob plane and this knob will fit. We don’t currently make a low knob, but we will.

These look fantastic! I live in the UK and own a 3D printer, would you consider selling the STL files on your website for people who would like to print their own knobs and totes? My wooden tote on my #5 broke recently, and I’ve been putting off making a replacement, this might be a great solution. I came across another tote file online, but yours seems much better designed.

Is there any way to get either the digital file or the drawings for this? I am making a scraper handle for my 3d printer and love the feel of these but would need either some specific drawings or the files so I can modify them. Or I guess some pictures exactly from the side and front and bottom etc. It would be easiest to use the files though.
