First Impression: Shadow Systems DR920

Comments

My standpoint on Shadow Systems is what you get for 30-70 bucks (depends where you get it) more then a Glock mos, you get more features, useable features at that (for the most part). They’re the American made Glock, slightly better triggers, good optic mounting system, good grip texture, usable slide serrations, better sights. I believe the reason for not being ambi is that’s gen 5 and the patent isn’t up yet. I could be wrong tho. I have an Xr920 and I also have a 19x. I prefer my 19x, that could just be I’m more familiar with it as I have well over 11k through it and only about 1500 through my xr920.

I bought an XR920 in 2021 and ran about 3000 rounds through it with only having issues during the first 200 round break in period. I was impressed with it and bought a CR920 when they first came out. That gun would not even get through a mag without issue. We replaced the barrel, trigger group, springs, mags. Nothing I did could get the gun to be reliable. All these parts fwiw were provided by shadow systems and they did everything they could on their end aside from just replacing the gun entirely. I sold it. Years later after seeing a lot of reliable CR920’s floating around I chalk up my experience to just being an out of spec gun due to a first production run error. Great guns with a great philosophy IF they work. Vet yours thoroughly if you have one.

I don't know that I've ever shot one

Mrgunsngear

@mrgunsngear Have you had any reliability/QC related issues with Shadow Systems guns?

Gregarious Badger

Glad to hear it's going well so far.

While helping a friend diagnose an issue on his MR920, I measured some surprisingly large differences in the critical dimensions between his and the other two 920 series pistols we had on hand. Wondering if this was common, my FFL let me put my micrometers on about two dozen SS pistols he had in inventory. I found critical dimensions measurements that were surprisingly inconsistent between pistols leading to implied tolerances ranges that for some components were nearly 10x that of OEM Glock parts. Since then I have measured some other 920 series purchased in earlier years and found similar dimensional variability. To be extremely charitable, I'll just say this is unimpressive manufacturing. Does this mean SS pistol are unreliable? Not necessarily, it depends on the dimensions of the parts in each pistol and how well they interface. Some pistols may be "tighter" and need a "break-in" period while others may have extremely loose interfaces between components (I have seen numerous instances of both). In other words, some people will tell you their 920s are highly reliable. Others will tell you their firing pins broke, that they feed unreliably (bad ramp geometry), and that they are not accurate (lockup is extremely loose). Based on what I have seen, both sets of experiences are true.

I’ve been carrying the XR920 elite since late 2022 and I’ve put roughly 2k rounds through it. Initially Shadow said that there’s a 200 round break in period and during that time I had a singular stove pipe. Aside from that no other issues.

Andraus Soup Campbell

That sucks.

Tracy

I've had issues too, my DR is on it's 2nd trip back for the trigger locking up...

I came through your class in February in Alabama with an XR920. I kept having Mags fall out of the gun. Got it home and tracked it down to 1 single mag where the catch on the mag body was bad. Got a new body and the problem went away. I also re-sprung it and now my one handed shooting has no more malfunctions. I did kill the Holosun 508T that was on it though. Replaced that with an RMR and am GTG.

Can’t wait for the full video. I have a separate question: I searched on your YouTube channel and here and couldn’t find a review about the Surefire Stiletto or the Pro model. I think the flat profile is intriguing for the times when I carry a Glock 26 and want to employ the light in the Sabre grip (I learned this handheld light technique in a low light class). In short, I was wondering if you have experience with the Stiletto and if it’s worth an add to the old Amazon cart.

Liking that MK12 on the wall!

Looking forward to the full review. Keep up the excellent work Aaron. Hope to be able to take one of your classes in the future.

Ive had 4 Shadow Systems pistols, and about 4k rounds between them all, and only had ammo related malfunctions, and like… 5 of those. Really like these guns. Works with Glock holsters, works with the great Glock mags, and basically has everything you’d do to a Glock without having to send it out. Stippling, slide cuts, and easily my favorite optic cut system. Currently Im carrying either my DR920 or CR920, and have been in some minor competitions with my DR920. Am I a huge simp for Shadow Systems? Yes. But only because they have great features and I have a track record of awesome reliability. And thats before you get to their use in self defense policy… Basically, if you use your pistol in self defense and the court clears you of wrongdoing, Shadow will send you a replacement pistol while yours is in evidence. Sorry for the novel, but I wanted to share my experience and appreciation for the brand.

I’ve had hit and miss experiences with mine. I first bought an XR920 combat. Jammed a lot, and Shadow Systems actually sent me a new barrel because the feed ramp was messed up. That was awesome of them. Then the trigger got really gritty. Bought a new trigger and and a couple springs, didn’t help. Bought a CR920P and the spring was intensely heavy. Had 30+ failures in 250 rounds. Still had issues after their break in period. They sent me a new spring and it was just as bad. Bought a Glock 43 recoil spring in it and it functions great.

Tracy

I’m coming up on 20k rounds on mine that I use for uspsa and haven’t had a single issue with it. That being said I have replaced high wear parts at the 15ish k mark only because it’s my main gun and I don’t want it to go down during a match

Very excited to see this review! I remembered Aaron talking about the possibility of a Shadow Systems review on an IG live he did years back and can't wait to see it come to fruition.
