The Basics-Sight Picture.

Comments

I am going to try to articulate my issue as best as possible here, but I'm struggling trying to understand exactly what each eye is or should be doing when getting a sight picture. For example, when I shoot iron sights on a handgun I close one eye although I know other people can shoot with both eyes open, but I think this is partially dependent upon each person's eyesight. I get confused when shooting red dots on a handgun and the instructor says I need to be target focused as to what exactly each eye should be doing. Should both eyes be open and looking through the red dot window at the target? Should only my dominant eye be looking through the red dot window and be focused on the target while my non-dominant eye looks outside the red dot window? Should I close my non-dominant eye when shooting red dots just as I do for iron sights? Again, I realize this could be different for each person based on their vision capabilities or limitations, such as being cross-eye dominant like I am. I'm hoping perhaps that you could expand upon the "target focused" concept when it comes to shooting red dots on a handgun.

Excellent discussion. I’ve been using your recoil diagnostic targets and they have been incredibly helpful.
