Added 2019-02-21 21:08:57 +0000 UTCWork on the "new" Floppotron is progressing very slowly due to lack of free time. However, I was able to get the most important ingredient which becomes more and more difficult to find in large quantities.
Unfortunately, all of the drives came in the same, black colour, but when someone offers me 200kg of floppy disk drives in 2018-19 then I'm not very fussy ;-). I haven't tried them yet (just sorted by model), but some of them have potential. Heavy and clumsy metal casing in some models implies nice and loud mechanism.
I don't think I'll need that much for a single build, but that's a good base to build a clone device for a public exhibition in future.

The nice thing about 200kg of drives is that there will surely be some duds. And since they're all black, you might be able to see how painting faceplates would look.

The floppy cannot store much audio in reasonable quality, but I'm thinking of something like a box release with "greatest hits". An audio CD + maybe a floppy disk with MIDI files in a custom printed box. I'll definitely think about that.
