The good news is that with this publication, there is now at least one story in the New column which isn't about Nazis.
(If you haven't seen the New column today, don't look. Just... don't.)
I've been dancing around the edges of this idea for a while. Various blog respondents made contributions to it: Equestron posted a documentary link about cheating machines in the old days, and of course we've got a National Coin Shortage (TM) going on in the States. Today, it all came together and went under the hooves of Twilight and Pinkie for more than 12,000 words -- along with bringing in a special guest star, because we're dealing with machines. Who doesn't love an appearance by Ratchette? Probably at least half of the downvoters.
I don't expect this one to do too well in the ratings, and part of that is based on length. A 2k story is a casual peek: 12k requires commitment. But it's the story I wanted to tell today, and I even managed to find some cover art of a faked slot machine display.
The real thing will be along in about fifteen years. Right around the time MLP is nostalgic, and that generation of fans is old enough to gamble.
You know it's coming.
