There are times when numbers only have the meaning which we assign to them. For example, this chapter worked out to about 8900 words, and what that means for Patreon purposes is being over the minimum for a post charge. But at the time of this writing, the story has an upvote total of 997. Do you know what it would mean if it got three more?
It would mean having to hit an extra key when transcribing the new total.
I've talked about the appeal of the round number in the blog. My catalog has eight stories which have a thousand or more upvotes: One-Tenth Bit is the most recent to cross the line, and that's more to Scribbler's audiobook reading credit than mine. Two stories are within six votes or less of the line -- and then the next one is well under 900. Do you know what that means?
It means I'm not very popular.
...seriously. There are catalogs which have multiple stories over 2k. 3k. Higher. I keep telling y'all: I'm a niche' interest. And by the way, the story currently under discussion? Also has 58 downvotes. I'm going to credit four of those to my Hatedom and at least two to the lack of sex tag.
The numbers on votes can indicate some degree of popularity. They certainly help to get a story into the Feature box, or keep one out. But it doesn't say everything about any given work. There are those who never have their writing discovered, some of the best stories on the site may be sitting unnoticed at a dual vote total of 8 : 0, being found is at much luck as anything else, and...
...when I compose 8900 words in one day, the number has whatever meaning I assign it.
In this case, it means I become tired and ramble accordingly.
