Weapon (shortsword), legendary (requires attunement)

An archeological find harnessing a mysterious energy none can understand. You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls you make with this weapon, which has 8 charges and regains all charges after you finish a long rest.

Play. As a bonus action you can click the button on the hilt of this weapon to spend a charge, causing the blade to glow for 10 minutes. For the duration, this weapon deals a force damage instead of slashing damage and ignores magical bonuses to AC (ex. Haste, Mage Armor, Shield, etc.)

The neon energy emits bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 15-feet.

ROM. When a creature you can see within 60 feet of you casts a spell, you can spend a charge as a reaction to download the spell into this weapon. The spell is downloaded at the level it was cast (ex. a 4th-level Fireball is downloaded at 4th level).

Emulate. You can spend charges equal to the level of the downloaded spell to cast it without expending a spell slot, as long as it does not require material components that have a gold cost. The spell's level, saving throw DC, and attack bonus (if any) are equal to the original version of the spell, but any damage dealt is converted to force damage. Only one spell can be downloaded into this weapon at a time, as downloading a new spell overwrites the previous spell.

Curse: Glitch. Dissecting the mysteries of this ancient technology is not without its risks, and unforeseen effects are rumored to haunt those who meddle with magic. This weapon is cursed, and attuning to it extends the curse to you until you are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic.

Whenever you spend a charge to use the Emulate property, there is a cumulative 5% chance for a Glitch to occur. This percentage resets back to 0% after a Glitch occurs. When a Glitch does occur, roll on the following table to determine the effect you are subject to for the next 24 hours.

d6 Glitch Effect

1. Whenever you take damage from a single source, you teleport to a random unoccupied space 30 feet away from you.

2. Randomly swap any two of your ability scores, and your ability scores update accordingly.

3. You transform into a different character race, and your features update accordingly.

4. Your speech becomes incomprehensible, as your words sound jumbled and scattered.

5. Everything you see is doubled. You have disadvantage on all attack rolls and Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

6. Roll again until you roll two different numbers other than 6. You are subject to both effects for the duration.

This effect ends early if you die or are targeted by the Greater Restoration spell or similar magic.

Testing Entry #16

Work is slow, but steady. With each day we come closer to understanding the artifact's inner workings. Admittedly, I remain baffled that such advanced technology existed in ancient times, but once its mechanisms are laid bare the mystery will be no more. Once we understand the last of its secrets, I have little doubt the world will ever be the same.
