Many of you asked me about how I made my squash and stretch effects since I do use them A LOT !!!
There are many exemples that helps to focus on them while animating. The first of them is when you want to use one during an ongoing action, it's pretty simple. you just have to begin the action with some frames before beginning to make the frame with the stretch effect (Point A) and then put the effect zone (in general this effect is not that big if it's on an ongoing action, but since it's an example, do as you wish!) always from A to B, don't hesitate to draw the zone on another layer :)
For the second example, I put the effect directly at the beginning of my animation (Ppoint A), the effect is larger and so you can make longer drawings too (Also for the effects, many phases are good, example with the tail following straigh to the head!)
Reaction, it happens after you did the stretch and squash effect, the volumes have to change at the end of the action to become normal again, there you have many choices, it depends how you feel it but in general (easy way) you have to double the size of your choice (exemple there I put the pigeon X2 for the size and reduced the sides, like a balloon!)
Always think at a balloon for those exercices, don't hesitate to watch videos as well (Slo-mo are great!)
The side effects, like the previous examples, just with another direction, I used the effect on many details (nose, muzzle, mouth) using different size on one effect make it looks prettier and also mastered. Don't put all of your effects at the same zone effect.
How to represent it ? You have many ways to illustrate the effetcs but the main one are the two I put, Straight line from 1 to B or many separated details from A to B !
Step by step reaction, it's easy, when you do an action it have to follow some rules, if a character is hitting another one, the shock can't happen before the hit came! The squash and stretch effects are the same there, always think to link the point A and B together before making anything happens (also you can put 3 frames between the hit and the reaction to let your public understand what happened first :)
Well thats all ! I hope it will help you since I do it a lot, it's awesome to give you some help with this particular effect !
Also many times I put "exemples" instead of "examples", my bad, I use the french word a lot :)
