Ask Me Anything!

Hey Patrons,

Those of you who are following the behind-the-scenes Lens videos know that I'm midway through my big international shop move, but stuck waiting for all my tools and shop stuff to arrive on the big truck. I'm likely to have at least one down week on the channel, so I thought, "Why not do a Q&A?". I normally save this for the anniversary shows, but rules are made to be broken, so here we are.

Whatever questions you might have about my channel, machining in general, the new shop, the move, Sprocket, anything– ask away in the comments below. You can send a private message if you prefer as well. I'll answer as many as I can in a video coming up soon.

That's a great idea. I could plug one into the garage door opener outlet which is already in the ceiling. Thanks for the suggestion!

Finally a Patreon member here -- watching your most recent Lens video, I'm willing to bet you're far from done installing lights in your shop - you can never have too much! (I thought I went overboard on my lights, but no regrets now!). One thing I've found to be super convenient is a ceiling mounted plug with one of those pull-down cords. I have an old folding table I use for assembly in the middle of the shop and it's nice to run power to it without having cords all over the floor.

I'm quite interested in the production of your videos. Do you do the editing yourself? Do you use cameras or smartphone? What computer & software do you use?

Neil Ives

It's on Thingiverse, including the Fusion file. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2830764 It's for AXA tool posts, FYI

Quinn can you please share with me the fusion 360 file for the 3D printed dial indicator for the BXA quick change tool post. I am have a hard time getting it to fit my tool post and it is much easier to make modifications to the Fusion 360 file instead of the .stl file.

Are you ever going to use that digital micrometer I sent ya? Ever consider doing a robot arm project with some programming? How about a hit and miss engine?

Ben Brinkley

I'm wanting to know the same thing and why

Ben Brinkley

Anyone know where she moved to?

Samuel Kilgore

Just saw the first moving video... thought I'd check in here. I guess I'd have known it was coming if I paid more attention on here. Ah well. :) Anyway, a few random questions (which you may or may not have answered previously?? If so, I've forgotten)... feel free to answer or ignore as you like. :) - What first got you into machining? - What's something we may not know about Quinn, but that Quinn wants us to know? - What excites you about (and/or otherwise motivates you to want to build) steam engines? - What's a machining-related project that you're wanting to do someday, but haven't yet started (or at least, that we haven't seen evidence of)? - What fears do you have to push through to get videos out each week? Again, totally fine to answer or not answer whichever of these you want. I wish you the best in the move (which I guess by now is at least partially done? Like, you're already in the new place, at least, even if you're maybe still waiting on stuff and/or still unpacking/setting things up/etc.), and that your new home is (or becomes) a comfortable and safe place to be.

What was your reason for moving?

Alan

* Similar to the regretted purchases question, but what's your list of the most over-rated tools? * What, if anything, will you be upgrading with Blondihacks 2.0? Be it machines, work areas, or equipment? Is there a hit-list of priority items that you want to get ASAP, or more of a wish list? * I don't know where you're moving to, but ~2500k's and across an international border sounds like Alberta maybe? Not far enough I think to be here in BC unfortunately! But if there's local community around (i.e. makerspaces), would that impact your content decisions? I'm thinking things such as alternate "sets" or usage of more specialized & larger tools on occasion.

Richard Sim

Hi Quinn, are you planning to stick with steam for your next engine build, or go in a different direction? I'd love to see an infernal combustion engine project.

* What's the strangest tool/material a viewer has sent you? * Favorite tool you have that you wouldn't have bought for yourself? * Tool or shop purchase that you regret most?
