2022-10-13 17:10:37 +0000 UTCYes, on drills the forces are all upwards. Milling cutters create lateral force, hence the need for more rigidity. This is why drill presses don't need drawbars to keep the tapers from falling out. Upwards forces only.

2022-10-13 16:18:58 +0000 UTCPresumably mill WITHOUT quill for rigidity but drill WITH quill ? Thanks Alan

2022-10-13 09:11:39 +0000 UTCThe Z axis DRO is used much less often, but occasionally. I have used to remember a head position between tool changes, that sort of thing. It's not a coarser adjustment than the quill- they both read down to the ten-thousandth. It's just a different control. You're really supposed to use the quill as little as possible. So when setting milling depth between passes, you are supposed to use the knee or column for that, not the quill. I tend to cheat and use the quill, but it's not ideal practice.

2022-10-12 17:06:16 +0000 UTCsorry !, thinking about fitting a DRO to my mill which has a one fitted to the quill as I think yours has. I can’t see the point in fitting one to the column Z axis which is much coarser adj. than the quill. Do you ever use the column DRO for intricate functions if so an example would be

2022-10-06 16:15:50 +0000 UTCHmm... I'm not sure why that would be. I just tried the link in a private browser (so it seems me as a new person) and it seemed to work. Are you sure the error is 103? Did you mean 403? If it's 403, the site may be blocked by your router or firewall.

2022-10-06 16:15:23 +0000 UTCHi Quinn, There's a story about the making of the mirror for the 200" Hale Telescope on Mt Palomar that the managers of the project had to take the mirror away from the mirror makers because they always thought there was a little bit more to do.; this was after years of work. I was reminded of the story when you said that you were marking the steam engine project "done", and then went on to say that there a few more things to do, but basically done. :-) Feel free to ignore this question is if is delving too much into your overall life, but is the channel your full time gig now? The way you discuss the work that you're doing, it sounds like there isn't time for a regular full time job in there. Just curious. Lastly, I would love to see more videos on electronics. I do some of that as well, and I think it'd be really interesting to see how some of the work in your previous projects is done. Maybe it's time to build another computer. :-)

2022-10-06 14:35:10 +0000 UTCHi Quinn, being a newbie here and having a problem when I click the above link, it goes to mu One Drive and keeps giving me a repeating 103 error. I can't seem to find a solution to the problem. Could you please point me in the right direction.
