Wobbler Steam Engine

Hey Patrons! Here's an oldie, but a goodie- the wobbler steam engine that I have demonstrated in a few videos. I've been designing more steam engines in my spare time, so keep an eye out for more. I also plan to build some casting-kit engines here on the channel. In the meantime, enjoy this wobbler!

That's great! Nice work! 😀 There is nothing quite so civilized as a running steam engine.

Blondihacks

I built this, but used Steves original (metric) drawings. Thanks for the inspiration! Here's a short video of it running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AHsE86o4xo

One of my favorite YouTube channels is Dave Richards' Old Steam Powered Machine Shop. He operates a stationary steam engine with line shafts to drive all his machine tools. It's amazing.

Next up: Steam powered Lathe 🤔

Awesome! Forceps are the greatest. :D

Blondihacks

OK, 16 four foot LED strips are up and my little shop is as bright as an operating room. If it were any brighter I might be tempted to wear my welding mask! And now I'll feel right at home using the forceps that you convinced me to buy. :-)

I appreciate the additional information. I think I'm going to get 16 four foot Barrina LED's in the 5000K range. My shop is a detached garage, 20 x 28 feet. These should get me off to a good start, and I can add more for task lighting if needed.

Tim Bramble

The other great thing about LEDs is you can get any color temperature you want. That's quite important for video. I like the white-blue look (goes well with my machines and workbenches). Incandescent light is very yellow, and you'll see that on a lot of YouTube channels. Fluorescent light gives everything a weird green glow and it can flicker in a way that the camera picks up. LED lighting is a dream come true for small time video producers- it used to be you needed high power halogens and other commercial lighting to get decent color temperature without shadows.

Blondihacks

Great! Operating Room bright is what I am after, and LED lighting in inexpensive and quite efficient. I'll go for it.

Tim Bramble

Thank you! Lighting is super important for video, and my shop is lit up like an operating room. It's blinding in there. I have the ceiling and every underside surface covered in LED lighting. Nothing fancy, just the cheap LED shop lights from Home Depot

Blondihacks

Hi Quinn. This is way off the previous topic, but I'm curious what type of lighting you have in the shop portion of your garage. The lighting in your videos is always excellent. I'm thinking of replacing the fluorescent lighting in my shop with LED lighting, and always value your input. I received my stickers in the mail this week. They are pretty nifty; thank you!

Hey Aron- sorry I accidentally deleted your post up above. I was trying to delete a reply of mine, and Patreon did something weird and now it's in a strange state. It says your comment is deleted, but my reply is there, but won't load when you click on it. Anyways, apologies for this and feel free to re-post.

I have seen a few YouTube videos of people making model-size hydraulic cylinders. It's really neat stuff and I'd like to give that a go at some point.

Blondihacks

It does! I've built two now and I like them quite a bit. It's a very forgiving design.

Blondihacks

Hey William! That file is for Fusion 360, so you would need it to access the 3D models. I have just added a 3D rendering of the engine (see this post above) so you can see what it looks like. I hope that helps!

Blondihacks

I built that one, works well.

David Few

I would like to look at the 3D view but it tells me I don't have an app that allows me to do so. What do I need to do to get this to work?

William L Burton

Have any other Patrons implemented "micro hydraulics"? It's an area that interests me, but I would like to experiment on a small scale. Kindred to steam - for me pneumatics would be similar at this stage. Always appreciate the benefit of other's learning to keep me from blowing myself up!
