Video Notifications
Added 2020-06-05 15:32:52 +0000 UTCHey Patrons! Would you like to be notified here when a new video comes out? Some creators do that, and I am considering it. However I don't want to spam you either. We all get enough email as it is! If it would be helpful for you, let me know in the poll below. For what it's worth, I've been keeping to a regular schedule of 10am Saturdays (PST) for new video posts, but if being notified via Patreon would be helpful, let me know!

Just so you know, in the Youtube metalworking community, another frequent user of the phrase "Bob's your uncle," is Tom Lipton (ox tools). That said, I use it fairly often, myself, but not so often as to have appeared in any of my videos. Tom is also the first one I noticed using "Rinse and repeat" to indicate iterative machining operations.

2020-10-18 17:30:34 +0000 UTCHI Dan! Welcome and thanks for the support! Does your Unimat have a morse taper in the tail stock? When you say "1/4 inch" that makes me think it's a straight shaft. That would be unusual, but I'm not familiar with Unimats. However you might try Sherline for accessories. They make all sorts of things for very small lathes, and might have stuff that fits yours.

2020-08-12 16:55:24 +0000 UTCHey, Quinn, good to know ya. This is just an introduction. I retired 8 years ago from technical support for the Springfield Police Department in Springfield Mass.. During my working life I was always into fabrication in one way, shape or form. Even as an adolescent of 5 years of age I marveled at my Lionel train set, finding a way of disassembling and checking out the guts within. Later I got into electronics and got my ham ticket at 13. I’ve always enjoyed the parts of it all, how they came together and made a functioning thing, be it animated or sedentarily purposeful, or not. A number of earlier years in various manufacturing companies gave me a chance to further my knowledge in many fields. Though I was investing my time into areas which brought me a living I enjoyed branching out. I’ve become one with many hats and I enjoy it. So I figured I’d expand my knowledge of machining while in retirement. I’ve had a Unimat lathe for years now and have had fun with it. Made a few mods to it to better it’s accuracy. Last year I purchased a Seig X2D small miller. I saw a wonderful review video on YouTube by someone who knows what they were talking about (and those guys are truly hard to come by). That review clinched it for me. It fit my pocket. Now I’m enjoying making mistakes with such accuracy you would not believe. Over the last year I’ve found some wonderful informative videos on YouTube on machining. I’ve watched many videos by Don Bailey and Joe Pie (whom I heard you reference ). I’ve used many of their techniques and recommendations on tools. I respect a good machinist. For years I’ve said that it’s not what they do but it’s how they do it. Not too long ago (a couple of months, tops) I happened to come across one of your videos. I really enjoy how you pursue a project from start to finish, mistakes and all. Don and Joe don’t do that (just saying). So I thought I’d invest in you. I’ve caught quite a few of your videos and enjoyed them all. I can’t help but notice your clean nails (just saying again). I mentioned earlier of my Unimat machine. One attachment I can’t find for it at MSC, Macmaster-Carr, or Little Machineshop is a live center with a 1/4inch shank. Have any suggestions? I’ve been long winded so I’ll finish with one more question. There is only one other person I’ve heard say “Bob’s your uncle!”. I heard you say it in one of your videos. The other person is Dave Jones at EEVblog. He’s from down under and very enjoyable, educational and informative. I view him a lot also. Be safe, be healthy. ~Dan Damkauskas

2020-08-12 02:51:08 +0000 UTCHoly hell Bill! That’s a lot of drama (and emojis) for one post. I was on a roller coaster emotionally till I realized....why? Enjoy the new wheels and HUGE lathe.

2020-08-06 21:22:25 +0000 UTCOh one more thing on this topic- you can also follow me on Instagram for additional notification, if you need it. In addition to other random machining stuff, I post a note about all my video releases there as well.

2020-06-09 15:04:26 +0000 UTC🤦♂️🤣😢 I missed the latest lens vid... not a notification problem tho, more of a ... Bill shouldn't have the laptop in the dusty shed problem 😬 Also been kinda busy, a bit of sh*t went bad but a lot more sh*t went really good. "Real Lathe" is finally here (13"x40" decent $5K Taiwan made machine left to me by Dad) Been getting some sorta practice with the mill too but really need tooling etc, vice, parallels and stuff will arrive soon as will some cutters. Van blew up...again...sick of lemons so I got a shiny new ute( really glad that past me knew that future me would have this drama 🤣) Major bank balance killer tho 😬. By this time next week tho, I will have an extra 40ish sq m (450sq ft) of shed real estate with potential for another 50ish sq m later on...f*ck you shed tetris, lets see what happens if I throw 2 shipping containers at you with a crane. Life just cost me some money and time...but I can't spend it all on beer🍺. I guess I could have moved to warmer climes but Tassie is too nice except for the 4 mnths of winter.

2020-06-08 23:49:39 +0000 UTCOkay everyone, thanks very much for the input! The “no” camp has it by a slim margin. I was surprised that the results were so close (87 to 75 against posting video notes here). I’ll go with the majority and not do it. For the other nearly 50% who would like more notification, I suggest hitting the little bell icon over on YouTube to ensure notification there. Thanks everyone!

2020-06-06 13:17:24 +0000 UTCDoesn't seem that useful really.. what we need is a notification for when we get notified about a notification.

2020-06-06 00:13:11 +0000 UTCI’m in the camp of having squelched all YouTube notifications, therefore I’d benefit from direct word here. However, it’s not a deal- breaker either way.

2020-06-05 21:46:27 +0000 UTCLots of interesting comments- thanks all! To clarify one thing, currently there is no notification on Patreon of a new video being posted to YouTube because I don't post a note here about having done so. The exception is if the video has project files like 3D models and plans to go with it. In that case, it's kinda like getting a notification of the video, but it's really just me posting the documents here. Probably 80% of my videos do not have any associated documents, and thus get no post here.
