Upcoming Changes

Oh no reeeeaaaading.... sorry about that, but I thought the easiest way to clearly lay out all my thoughts would be through text. There are going to be some changes to my youtube channel and patreon coming soon and I wanted to detail them here.

I've had some ups and downs when it comes to anime reactions. On my old channel I eventually slowed the pace of reactions because I wasn't gaining views/subs/whatever at the rate I previously had been anymore. Later I was able to realize that was my own fault. I had been reacting to shows voted for by my patrons, then I added a bunch of seasonals because I thought I could do it all at the same time, and some issues around my living situation at the time made me spread everything a little too thin. So I cut back to only a few series, then eventually decided to ramp things up again with the new channel and a lot of seasonal reactions. Unlike the previous reactions, I decided to edit these these to go for more of a mass appeal, which I've now realized was probably a mistake.

I don't think I need, or even necessarily want, to go for those massive view counts. I think I can have a lot of fun with a smaller, tight group here on patreon, hanging out on discord, etc. The editing of these videos has taken a physical toll on me as well, my wrist and fingers have been recovering for quite a while now from the strain of all the repetitive motion I was doing during editing. I also think full length reactions are more my style. Sometimes while filming a reaction I knew would be edited, if I got to a part of the episode that was clearly important and I knew that segment would make it into the edited version, I would often put a little more emphasis on that part of the reaction, maybe say an extra sentence or two that I might not have otherwise said. Not that the reactions were ever fake or anything, it was just a matter or putting a little more or less focus into what I talked about based on whether or not I thought that segment would make it into the edited version. It wasn't that fun, always being conscious of that, I'm much better at free flowing commentary where I don't have to worry about such things, and don't have to go for the big OMG reaction moments.

So as you can probably tell, I won't be doing edited reactions anymore. I'm sorry if you really enjoyed those but that's how it's going to be. I'm also taking a break from current seasonal anime. Partially just to rest my hand more for now (this typing isn't helping much I'm dumb) and also just to get a bit of a break in general. I've realized that reactions on there own aren't that satisfying for me to make anymore. I want them to serve some kind of purpose, to be building toward some kind of goal. So starting with the summer anime season I will resume reactions for new seasonal shows with the goal of making a "best of the year" list. Non seasonal anime will become exclusive to patreon. I never wanted to do that. I always wanted shows to just be early access for patrons and always eventually make it onto youtube, but I think this is the best way to go about it because unfortunately, monetary gain is a factor to consider. The model of "popular stuff to draw in some views on youtube, then have the more niche stuff on patreon for those who like my stuff" seems decent to me. Plus it gives patrons more than just "early access", you get stuff that's just for you.

The model I'm considering is basically this: $2 - Vote in polls to determine my non seasonal shows and get one week early access to seasonals. I don't mind doing the seasonals a week late on youtube because like I said, while I want to strive for SOME views, I'm not going for mass appeal. $5 - Access to the exclusive non seasonal show reactions. $10 - Access to exclusive movie reactions, possibly live streams and other exclusive content. Also probably early access to the non seasonal shows by a week or two. And Gintama stays the same of course.

There's probably more to be said about my plans and motivations, so if you have questions discord is the best place to talk. Or you can comment here if you'd like.

I would recommend putting up timer reactions to pilot-episodes on youtube giving people looking for something specific a chance to find your reactions to it on patreon through youtube

So what Patreon tier will Gintama be on?
