Way back in the Benizakura arc, Katsura said this to Takasugi: “He (Gintoki) should hate this world more than anybody, but despite that he’s still trying to move forwards.” Also, in the flashback frame that shows Shoyo’s students around his head in Courtesan of a Nation arc, Gintoki is the only one holding a sword.
