A Simple Life Poll: Advice to Briar (Poll)

Briar is pining for Kayla.  Kayla's got the hots for Briar.  Is it a match made in heaven or oil and water?  How do Avery and Winona handle this?

I will leave this poll active for 24 hours.

The 'Go for it, but Kayla isn't like you and shouldn't/doesn't need to change.' was the angle we ended up getting, and it makes a lot more sense, but it still has problems. I don't understand why at this point in their lives it is still only ever expected of Kayla's romantic partners to perceive and avoid her behavior and not the other way around. Especially considering Kayla herself expressed some pretty serious distaste for 'clinginess', I fail to see why no one ever expects her to better gauge her romantic partners for how serious they want the relationship to be, and then NOT fuck and drop them. She has the most romantic experience of anyone, and is therefore rightly expected to be at least a decent judge of character and what she herself wants. Attempting one night stands or disposable relationships with people who have stars in their eyes is unjust. Although there isn't a bisexual term for it, when done by lascivious men to romantic women, it's called 'womanizing' and women to men called 'maneating' and its just and only bad either way. It's a predatory thing that someone ought not do. Kayla may not need to change what she wants from a relationship generally, but the advice given by Avery to Briar contra Winona about not being up front about what Briar wants in order to avoid getting hurt, is wrong. Briar very much should be absolutely direct about what she wants, and Kayla should refuse to date her because of it unless she's had a change of heart. Obviously not every character needs to have a perfectly moral God's eye view of every social interaction, that would be boring. But it needs to be acknowledged that Avery seems to be swinging and missing here, and Winona is too. If you aren't counting on either one pivoting, they are a bad match.

nope

I disagree, I think Avery being on "Kayla's side" basically just amounts to him saying "Look, I'm a romantic, but I've known Kayla for a very long time, and she isn't. I'd love to see the both of you happy together, but I don't think Kayla can or wants to change and if you still want to go for it, that's just something you'll have to keep in mind - that at the end of the day she might not be able to give you what you need." I don't think that compromises Avery's character; he's still a romantic, but he's also a good friend to Kayla and understands that she's not the settling down monogamous type, and he's basically just like, putting it out there for Briar to take in; being encouraging but also not giving her false hope.

I personally don't understand Avery being on 'Kayla's side' in this way at all. He too is a hopeless romantic and also sympathizes strongly with Briar. There seems to be no world where he'd encourage Briar to stop wanting true love and start settling for Kayla's flingy hedonism. The vote's the vote, but being on 'Kayla's side' even as a friend would seem to consist in Avery saying "Please just be another fling for Kayla, this on account of the fact that I like Kayla and her fucking you at least once just for fun is deeply important to me. Even if it's at the obvious expense of your well-being and shatters your idealism." You could reflavor the 'Kayla's side' vote to be about Avery wanting Briar to get some low stakes experience with Kayla before she gets all doe-eyed about someone, especially considering Kayla obviously isn't the person for her. But again that would be for Briar's sake, not Kayla's that he'd be encouraging this. It's not the Kayla's side answer, it's Briar's side v2. Depending on how this vote is handled this is going to be some really odd behavior. If we are throwing the actual personalities and motivations of characters out of the window for votes we might as well just have Briar immediately join a throuple with Avery and Winona and get on her knees right now. That would at least be fun chicanery. Avery actively encouraging someone he sympathizes with to behave in a way that hurts their feelings at the expense of true love, isn't.

nope

I doubt we'll be seeing any cucking in this story.

Grimbous

Definitely. If Split wins they're not going to be black and white in their attitudes but they'll each have their own bias.

Grimbous

I'm kinda torn - I think 'split' is my favourite answer but I feel like both Avery and Winona can understand it from both sides, because Avery's obviously Kayla's bestie and has her best interests at heart, but I feel like he's almost as much of a romantic as Winona is. And similarly, Winona's a huge romantic and totally gets where Briar's coming from, but at the same time - Kayla kinda broke her heart a little bit because romantically they weren't on the same page, and I can imagine her seeing a bit of herself in Briar in this situation and part of her wanting to spare her that fate.

Matilda Beekay

If we are lucky, maybe Briar finds out she is into getting cucked. Any way i hope they can worke something out, she is to innnocent to get her heart boken ❀
