I just got back from Leonardtown, Maryland where I spent a several days learning to ride sidesaddle. I had an amazing time. I’m just a student rider; I took dressage lessons for a year or so about ten years ago, but I wasn’t raised with horses, so riding doesn’t come easy. There’s a lot to learn. But I have to say, for all the dressage lessons, I discovered I really love riding sidesaddle. I like the feeling, and I enjoy the more relaxed legs/feet. For instance, when riding sidesaddle, one doesn’t put the heel down deeply into the stirrup. It’s really interesting, I think I prefer it to riding astride.
My teacher (and new friend!) is Christina Mulqueen, and I met her through another incredible rider in England who teaches actresses to ride sidesaddle for period films.
Christina kindly dressed me in her vintage habit, and her son took most of these photos. I’m riding Mr. Bleu, he’s a lovely horse who has just one eye, which he lost to an infection at age 7, but he’s perfect. I rode him for three days, he’s my favorite horse I’ve ever ridden… a perfect gentleman, very patient with me as I learn.
I had so much fun getting to know Christina and her family, plus all of her horses, beagles and cats! Hoping to go back again soon, maybe when I’m in DC for the tour.
