HEXROLL 2e - alpha build #3 with offline support
Added 2023-08-20 17:10:53 +0000 UTCHello Brave Adventurers,
My day job involves caring for a high value, high profile web service, ensuring it is up and running 99.999% of the time. We call this five nines - and we work hard to make it happen.
Applying all the best practices I know of to hexroll dot app, it will have an outage at some point in time.
To reduce the risk level, this alpha build includes Hexroll Backpack - an offline sandbox viewer.
Here is the change log:
New features
- Hexroll Backpack - offline viewer for Hexroll 2E sandbox backup files.
Bug fixes
- Map will not update when re-rolling a complete realm.
- NPC HP can sometimes drop to 0 due to CON penalty.
- Missing tooltips in map buttons.
- Delivery quests will sometimes show an error message.
Hexroll Backpack is the new Hexroll 2E offline viewer. It provides the same navigation and crawling experience that the online website has, but can still work even when hexroll dot app is unavailable.
You can use it to liberate your sandbox from hexroll dot app or as a backup plan, ensuring your game sessions are safe from any outage.
Download the viewer application from https://hexroll.app (Windows and Linux, MacOS coming soon) and create a Hexroll Backpack File from your sandbox map (the new download button in the bottom-left corner of the map).
It can take anywhere between one to five minutes for Hexroll to package a rendered version of your sandbox, depending on the scale of your world.
When Hexroll is done, you will be offered a download link for the backpack file. You can now use the installed Hexroll Backpack app to open the file and play disconnected from hexroll dot app.
Technically speaking, Hexroll Backpack is an Electron based stand-alone app that contains enough of the code to navigate a rendered copy of your sandbox.
The Hexroll Backpack File (.hbf) is an SQLITE3 database file containing a pre-rendered version of your entire sandbox together with all the maps and the search index.
Important! you will likely be discouraged from installing the app by Windows as it is not 'signed'. This is because I have yet to purchase a (surprisingly expensive) EV Code Signing service. If you get the warning message from Windows, click 'more info' to get the option to install.
Enjoy the crawl!

This is apparently a known false-positive when not code signing an Electron-based application. I have re-enabled the download links and added a Zip file link that will hopefully be better accepted by your system. EDIT: There's an update installer available now at hexroll.app with a clean report: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/93c74a5d24941a148bc678ded12dce3b0828392149d8c5a3e1cee5da131ae5e6 but to clarify, the previous installer is similarly safe.

2023-08-21 07:41:18 +0000 UTCWindows didn’t say anything about being “signed” but instead said that hexroll was putting “Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml” onto my computer. Which is clearly malware.
