DuckTales 2017: How to Reboot a Classic Series Thesis & Points

Hello all! So my next main review is going to be of the DuckTales reboot. Afterwards, I'm going to be working on a video essay on how the series is the prime example of how to make a great reboot of a classic series. Below are my main thesis as well as the points I'll be exploring. Hope you all enjoy this early look.

Main Thesis:

To make a good reboot, you must do three things:

1. Understand and clearly respect the spirit of the original, either remaining faithful to it (Not meaning not changing anything, but rather keeping the spirit - the tone, meaning, etc. - of the show intact), or subverting it in a clever and thoughtful way.
2. Adapt the show to the zeitgeist without infringing upon its core identity. The modern insights - current worries, modern technology, current pop culture - should be kept supplemental. Also be aware of dated tropes that could possibly be improved or parodied.
3. Not shit on the original target audience, but also not pander to them. Treat them respectfully and win their trust, while also allowing new viewers to join. It is not a battle of new vs old, but rather creating a bridge between the old and the new.

Points:

• The series is still episodic, but is more focused on characterizing the cast while also gradually building an ongoing story (These being the mystery of Della Duck, as well as the return of Magica DeSpell).
  • It’s very similar to Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, albeit nowhere near as dark at times
• Making the triplets - Huey, Dewey, and Louie - actual individual characters with their own traits, personalities, motivations, and goals.
• Giving Webby more agency and character, as she was originally the token female.
• Integrating modern technology.
• Meta humor galore.
  • It’s actually good here as it’s kept supplemental for more clever viewers, instead of cynically and half-heartedly driving the narrative like the newer live action Disney remakes.
  • Also not shitting on fans of the original or pandering to them, in the case of Teen Titans Go.
