Ranking the Winx Club's Outfits

INTRO:

I’m surprised I haven’t talked about this before. Fashion is one of the core elements of the Winx Club franchise, and so I figured why not spend some time appreciating (and roasting) the girls’ iconic looks? Especially cuz we all need some more laid back, lighthearted content from time to time.

So today, we’re gonna be ranking the girls’ casual outfits from every season. These are the everyday outfits the girls wear when they’re not transformed and just going about their lives, though in the case of season 2, we’ll also be including their back to school outfits which were criminally underused.

Anyhow, let’s begin, starting with the girls’ worst everyday look.

NUMBER 8, Season 7 Alfea Uniforms:

I don’t think I’m alone in saying the Alfea uniforms in seasons 6 and 7 were a bad idea. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing inherently wrong about the idea of a magical boarding school or college having some kind of uniform. The main issue comes in the fact that it cements the Winx’s age being reset to 16 in the newer seasons, trying to make them appear as young as possible so they can be kept at Alfea indefinitely for easy plots.

Beyond that, though, the season 7 uniforms are just not good. As much as I’m a simp for plaid (damn you, Kingdom Hearts 3), the fact the girls all have pale with nearly-invisible red and harsh navy blue patterns reads as an attempt to forcibly tie the designs together, when the fact is these colors just don’t work on all the girls, and feel out of place. I don’t think I’d mind it as much if each girl’s plaid had different colors. Like if Tecna’s was purple and green, or Stella’s was orange and gold, and so on.

Moreover, the outfits themselves don’t tell you anything about the girls’ personalities. They all give off the same generic academia vibe and have no charm or character. The only one who stands out as acceptable is Musa thanks to her hair, hoop earrings, and the little music note over her tie, but it’s not enough to save this look.

Not to mention Bloom and Stella having the exact same silhouette thanks to their shirts, skirts, and especially their ponytails. On their own, they do look cute, and you could argue it helps as a visualizer for how they’re the closest out of the whole club. But combined with all the other problems I’ve already mentioned, it drives home the fact that the girls aren’t allowed to stand on their own. They all look like part of an incredibly boring unit.

NUMBER 7, Season 6 Alfea Uniforms:

The season 6 uniforms may technically be more same-y in this god-awful pastel color palette, which no, I’m not a fan of, but at least the outfits do a better job at individualizing each girl and fitting her personality… for the most part.

I definitely prefer the prototype looks. The colors on these outfits are more eye-catching thanks to the contrast between the blacks and pinks, as black and pink is simply a superior color combination. Compare this to the finalized looks that traded in the darker colors for more washed out light blues and purples. It’s not awful by any means, but it’s far less striking.

I also definitely prefer the prototype designs for Aisha and Tecna’s uniforms. In my humble internet opinion, Aisha looks way better in this suit, tie, and boots than the sweater, puffy skirt, and heels, and vests were simply just made for Tecna.

Neither of Flora’s looks are particularly appealing to me, and Stella strangely seems the least noteworthy in this look overall. It’s ironic, that the queen of fashion who designed these outfits in-canon would wind up giving herself the least compelling outfit, but maybe it was just an act of charity for her gals.

Bloom’s look is a bit generic too, but I feel it works better for her as the team leader (and also given season 6 Bloom is the definition of generic protagonist). What saves her look for me is the cute braided ponytail. I mean, c’mon y’all, it’s so adorable, and it’s a nice way to change up her hairstyle while making sure it still fits her being a little cinnamon roll.

But Musa? OH DAMN. Forget her prototype, her finalized look literally makes this whole aesthetic worth it. The striped jacket, the plaid skirt, AND THAT TIE?! Everything I could’ve asked for. And her silhouette, bringing back her ponytails in a way to make sure they work with her longer hair? Cured my sadness, instantly.

Honestly, I don’t think I’d mind these outfits in the first couple of seasons. At least then the uniforms would’ve made sense and would’ve fit the more lighthearted tone.

NUMBER 5, Season 4 Everyday:

Now, season 4 was my favorite for a long time, namely because I appreciated the attempt to have the Winx leave Alfea and become adults. However, season 4 has lost a lot of love from me over time for a number of issues, and the fashion unfortunately is one of them. Some of these looks just aren’t well-suited to the girls’ personalities.

We’ll start with the positives, namely Tecna, Aisha, and Stella. Tecna and Aisha are tied for my favorite looks this season. Tecna looks amazing in the pants and blazer with the little sweater overtop, and the clip holding back her hair gives her a clean, professional vibe. To me, she feels like she’s about to walk into a high-profile office building and declare herself CEO.

Aisha’s look, meanwhile, fits her athletic, sporty persona, and I appreciate the balance of green and pink in her design, and I utterly adore her hair and headband.

Stella’s kinda like Tecna in the business-savvy sense. The dress is a bit too simple for me, but I like the bold orange along with her hair style.

Flora’s look is okay. It looks like she tried to copy Stella’s look, but make it more casual. It suits her fine, but it’s probably the most basic out of all the outfits, and for me is a downgrade from her previous look.

I used to really like Bloom’s outfit, and I think the reason for that is the hair. I think it’s a nice change of pace from her usual hairstyle while trying to make it new. It’s longer and a bit wilder. The outfit and especially the color palette is what’s killing me. Rainbow has had this long-running effort to try and put Bloom in as much pink as possible, and it just doesn’t work for her. She looks much better in blues and yellows. In my opinio, the only pinks Bloom rocks are the purplish plums from her Onyrix look. To be honest, Onyrix slayed with the color palette changes and y’all need to put some damn respect on her name.

And… Musa’s. Oh god, Musa. See, the Fairy of Music was always a tomboy, but in season 4, suddenly she veered into more feminine clothing, to the point she honestly looks the most feminine in the season 4 outfits. If they’d made a point about her trying out more feminine looks and worked that into her character arc, then I’d be onboard, but it feels like they just forgot who Musa was when they were creating her new look.

I actually don’t mind the look, but I think what sinks it is the choice of pinks over reds, along with the little bow, the polka dot patterns, and her hair style that make it feel so radically different from her older looks. Again, I don’t think it looks bad, but it just doesn’t feel like Musa.

NUMBER 5, Season 8 Everyday:

I think it’s fair to say most people aren’t fans of the season 8 art style. Not only do the girls look younger and far less recognizable, but the muted color palette has also resulted in Flora and Aisha being whitewashed, with Flora looking like she could easily pass for white. Which, given the fact she was replaced with a white woman in Fate the Winx Saga… yeah, this feels far more insidious now.

That said, the season 8 outfits themselves aren’t all that bad. I actually really love Flora’s sweater with the flower detailing, the boots, and ESPECIALLY the scarf. My girl rocks the darker pinks and purple. In the old art style, this look would be everything to me.

For Bloom, meanwhile, I’m happy to see her back in mostly blue, and the jacket with the dress and shoes are adorable. Personally, it feels like a cross between her season 1 outfit, along with her alternate season 2 outfit.

Musa’s is probably my least favorite, mostly because the washed out colors keep me from enjoying the look.. I actually really like the look, especially the vest and belt, but I think it could’ve used a different color palette, especially given Stella’s already decked out in all purple. But not the bow. That bow needs to go. It does not scream Musa in the slightest.

Speaking of Stella, though, I love this look for her. I appreciate it when the designers mix up the girls colors every once in a while, even if it may not work, because when it pays off, it pays off in spades. I loved Stella’s turquoise Onyrix look, and I adore this starry purple aesthetic for her. It gives me the vibe of her veering more towards her lunar side and expressing that through her wardrobe, which I am here for. Fairy of the Sun and Moon for life.

Tecna’s is probably the oddest look given it’s so different from her usual style, but I do think it works for her geeky side. The overalls with the poofy sleeves are precious, along with her bow, and I actually kinda love her in yellow. Her main color has always been purple, but she’s also proven she can rock blue and green, so I’m not surprised she’s able to pull off yellow given how close it is to her usual neon greens.

And Aisha’s look? The pants with that belt, and the pale green top? It’s everything. I’m here for it. My only complaints are that her hair has been altered to look more like the other girls’, which I’d imagine goes hand-in-hand with the whitewashing. I’m no expert on black women’s hair, so if I’m wrong here feel free to say so in the comments, but I do recall hearing mentions that Aisha’s hair had been stripped of its iconic waves and that it upset some folks.

And on a lighter note, what happened to that cute hat from the promo art? It oozes style, and I’m living for the dark jade green with the red roses all around it. That hat alone could’ve saved season 8… okay no it couldn’t, but it would’ve at least made it more tolerable.

NUMBER 4, Season 2 Back To School:

I’m still surprised how little love these outfits get. The girls only wear them in the first couple episodes of season 2 in honor of the new school year at Alfea, and for the most part, they disappear afterwards. Sadly, Aisha technically doesn’t have a back to school look given she’s the new girl… and also she just scaled an underground hell castle and clawed several miles to Alfea for help, so she didn’t exactly have time to get dressed up.

Bloom’s look, meanwhile, technically does show up some more. She’s an odd case, because she’s got a few alternates of this look. This specific combo of striped leggings, frilled skirt, and sweater t-shirt becomes her main season 3 look, though for right now she’s got yellow hearts instead of pink, along with a short-lived headband that I really wished stayed for longer. I get the attempt to make the look more casual, Stella, but Bloom rocks both.

She gets another alternate in the Shadow Phoenix special, where the colors get completely swapped around. Darker blue shirt, yellow arm band, pink skirt. It’s an interesting change, but I prefer the normal coloring for her.

But can we all agree Stella rocks pink and red? She rocks this look, and I absolutely adore the red beaded belt. Flora’s also rocking the yellow and blue combination, and I adore the flower patterns on her shirt and pants with reversed colors. These looks did a surprisingly good job switching up their usual colors.

Musa’s outfit is simply iconic. I love the belt with the little sash on her jeans, along with her long-sleeve shirt with the pink short-sleeved jacket. It’s a nice glo-up from her season 1 look, with the same color palette, but more cleaned up and stylish.

Tecna’s is a bit odd, and probably my least favorite of the group. It’s kinda like Musa’s in that it’s a more stylish version of her season 1 look, though I feel Tecna’s goes for a more futuristic, out-there vibe with the balance of purple white, and green, along with only one sleeve.

NUMBER 3, Season 5 Everyday:

Honestly, these looks are what the season 4 outfits should’ve been. The girls look older, and stylish as all hell, and all the looks fit each girl’s personality while allowing them all to still function as a unit. The one common element across all these outfits are the knee-high boots, but it’s more than them just being different colors. Each pair of boots is a different style tailored to each girl, and beyond that, the outfits are completely different from each other.

I love the fact Bloom’s got a lower-scale version of her Enchantix hair in this look. And while I’m not keen on how much pink there is in this look, I do love the outfit, and the little bow on her shoulder strap is super cute.

Stella’s dress is absolutely gorgeous. I love the balance of orange, purple, and pink throughout her outfit, and this hairstyle is a great look on her. Some of the stock art depicts more intricate patterns than we see in the show, including black and pink stripes, and I am here for them.

Flora’s look is probably the least favorite for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well-suited to her, but it’s a bit too soft for my liking. I do like the ponytail, but to me, she looks more like she’s about to go gardening than save the world. But hey, that’s probably just me.

Musa’s look is one of my absolute favorites. She’s back to her usual self, a more tomboyish look with the jeans and crop top that still has an air of femininity. My only complaint is that the stock art had a different hair style for her, with the bun on the back of her head instead of the top, and I feel that provides a more balanced look.

Tecna’s look is a lot more casual than her season 4 look, but really helps emphasizing that she’s broken out of her shell. She’s still a geek, but she’s gonna have a damn good time with her girls too. I love her skirt with the white fanny pack, cuz if any of the girls were to rock a fanny pack, it would be Tecna. And this hairstyle is one of her best.

Aisha, meanwhile, looks like a watersporting queen. I love this onesie ocean-blue jacket for her with the purple shirt inside, cuz I think it connects her more to the water aspect of her power, which does check out given this is an ocean-themed season. Again, her hair is different in the show versus the stock art, where in said stock art her hair is more puffed out with a killer vizer and glamorous golden earrings.

I’m sad these details didn’t get to shine in the show itself, though, but overall, I absolutely love the season 5 looks. The girls look older and like they’ve fully come into themselves as adults, and I really wish these were their season 4 looks instead.

NUMBER 2, Season 1 Everyday (incl. Aisha’s hoodie):

Ah yes, the looks that started it all. But doesn’t that just show how well they’ve aged. Even now, these outfits do a great job getting across each girl’s personality right out the gate, while looking cute as hell.

This is probably Bloom’s most popular look, with an abundance of blue accented by a bright yellow, perfect for her as a fiery little cinnamon roll. It’s also refreshing that Bloom is a fire elemental who isn’t automatically put in red, because honestly, red doesn’t suit her well, cosmetically or personality-wise, especially cuz she already has the fire-red hair. The combination of red hair with blue in her outfit balances the look out and makes it more appealing to the eye, and the yellows provide enough of a spark to catch your eyes. Also, BELL BOTTOM JEANS. FUCK YES.

Stella’s is perhaps a tad too revealing, but it also suits her really well. I’m still surprised she’s able to pull off this combination of green, yellow, and orange, but I think that’s just a testament to how Stella’s ideas can seem a bit too out-there, but she still has the vision to make it iconic. I also love the yellow belt around her orange skirt, as the little yellow ornaments make me think of stars or suns.

Flora’s look is adorable. I love her poofy green top, along with the pink skirt with strawberry patterns. It suits her floral aesthetic perfectly, and the golden earrings are iconic. Musa’s one-shoulder red top is instantly recognizable, along with the baggy blue jeans to balance out her look. And Tecna’s purple-green outfit gives the vibe of a sci-fi-inspired look that’s both stylish and dorky, perfect for Tecna.

We’re also gonna count Aisha’s season 2 hoodie look here given she ditches it in season 3. It’s got a darker color palette for her than usual and is a bit muted, but it really works for her as she’s introduced to the story scaling, again, the hell castle. I love her hoodie sleeveless top, along with the asymmetric arm bands. It’s a very combat ready look that’s more focused on practicality than anything else, yet it still looks so badass. We stan.

NUMBER 1, Season 3 Everyday:

Objectively, these are the girls’ best looks. They’re perfectly suited for each Winx, and serve as the best glo-ups they’ve ever received. We’ve already talked about Bloom’s, but she also has an alternate look with a long-sleeve blue shirt with a pink heart, and it’s so cute! And again, it has a weird alternate coloring in that one episode about the pixies, and I don’t hate it, but I’m not a fan of the white-and-pink top over the teal shirt. It’s… no.

Again, Stella proving she can rock any color combination. She looks great in the mint green tube top with purple-pink stripes. Flora’s pink top with the red skirt and matching boots look great and provide some much-needed red in these outfits’ looks, and she still gets her little pop of green through her choker.

Musa looks stunning in all the blue. It’s a big departure from her last two looks, but it’s perfectly suited to her, with some splashes of red to keep her color present while letting her rock something new. Specifically I love the poofy disco pants, oh my god, they scream Musa.

Tecna’s look is the culmination of “I’m a nerd and geek, but I’m also fucking fabulous.” This is probably my favorite casual look from her. I just love the purple top and skirt with the matching pants, along with the purple-pink boots that match her hair.

Aisha’s look was also her season 2 look, but I’m gonna count it here because it feels well-suited to her becoming part of the group as she breaks out of her shell and goes for brighter colors. I’m here for the water symbol on her top, along with the sporty cargo skirt and knee-high skirt.

CONCLUSION & OUTRO:

The fashion in Winx Club is one its most important aspects, allowing the characters to express who they are through their looks. When utilized well, fashion can be a great way to say a lot about your characters through just their designs, while also making you utterly obsessed with their aesthetics. Even the lower-tier outfits on this list, in some way, do kinda stand out compared to character designs from other shows, so while they may not be my jam, they still have some charm.
