Re-Ranking the Winx Transformations

INTRO:

Yep. We’re doing this again. It’s been a while since my last video on this topic, and my thoughts have changed quite a bit. And so I figured, why not redo this video and share my updated thoughts? Not to mention, I have sins to atone for, like being too mean to Believix, and being far too nice to Butterflix. Now without further ado, let the roasting begin.

NUMBER 12, Mythix:

Some things just never change, and one of those things is the profound awfulness of Mythix. It doesn’t even really need to exist. The excuse that the form is needed to enter the Legendarium World functions on a surface level, but when you really boil it down, removing it from season 6 wouldn’t change anything. It’s yet another excuse to have two forms per season to double potential merchandising sales. And even though Mythix has a more acceptable excuse, I’d take Harmonix and Sirenix over it any day.

In terms of powers, Mythix has to have the worst collection of spells. More of the same generic blasts and shields, and they don’t even have the benefit of kickass names. Waterizing Ray is a crime against humanity, as is the fact Musa doesn’t even get any Mythix spells. And what was even the point of the wands - besides having toyetic elements - if they weren't going to play a cool role in the magic? The song is fine, though naturally I prefer the prototype by Elisa Rosselli.

The transformation sequences are… the worst. Just awful. The pointless spinning is made worse by the ugly character models, and the sequences being bland and generic seems fitting for these underwhelming designs. Honestly, the only redeeming quality of the Mythix designs are the wings, specifically Musa and Aisha’s. These two really put in the work to make these forms worth it. God bless Sonic Wave.

NUMBER 11, Butterflix:

Perhaps one of my biggest regrets is being far too nice to Butterflix. Even saying that now I feel like my tongue could fall off. This transformation is hardly more than a glorified meme. It’s cursed. Just all-around cursed. Outfits that are both uniform and tacky, and hideous enough to ruin monarch butterfly themes for at least a decade. They’re essentially the issues of the kidified newer seasons manifested in a single form. The only positives are Musa and Aisha, who somehow manage to make any form look good. God bless them.

The song is fine. It’s nothing special, but it's not horrible either. Alessia’s vocals actually seem stronger here than usual. In concept, Butterflix has no reason to exist. We already had a nature-themed transformation in Sophix… and technically Harmonix, if you subscribe to the Nature’s Key thing. Though I suppose getting any new form after the one based on the all-powerful Dragon Flame is bound to feel like a downgrade, but did it have to be a drop to rock bottom?

The spells are incredibly lacking, and Butterflix in general seems to struggle with offensive capabilities. It canonically can’t harm any part of nature, which is… everything. The only time the Winx use their environment creatively to circumvent this issue is against a wild magic plant on Lynphea. But against Kalshara? God, they are helpless.

Just overall, Butterflix is a complete waste, and is better left forgotten. Even though that cursed meme dance is going to haunt us until climate change ends us all.

NUMBER 10, Tynix:

Continuing the theme of transformations I was far too nice to, thank the lord Tynix wasn’t in 3D, because it would’ve made Mythix look spectacular. These outfits are the definition of basic, with the girls looking like they’ve been bedazzled at gunpoint. Even Aisha can’t save this look, but at the very least, Musa can. God bless the Fairy of Music. That awkward moment when the Fairy Animals’ evolved forms look better than any of the Tynix outfits.

More uninspired spells as usual, even with the special spells used alongside the Fairy Animals. Honestly, the only thing about Tynix that’s truly great is the song; thank you, Elisa Rosselli, for your divine vocals. I will admit, though, I love the concept behind the transformations with the girls posing like supermodels. It’s just in execution, it’s very lacking.

Honestly, part of me is thankful season 8 gave us Enchantix instead of Tynix when the girls went into a mini-world, because I’d rather see a tacky Enchantix than whatever the hell season 8 would’ve turned Tynix into.

NUMBER 9, Dreamix:

It’s difficult to try and gauge Dreamix and Onyrix alongside the other forms, not because they’re exclusive to World of Winx, but more so because they tend to run by different rules, specifically in the spell department. But that being said, I actually like the real-time spells without names, allowing the Winx to manipulate their elements freely. I kinda wish we saw more of this alongside more unique named spells.

The Dreamix designs are solid. Nothing amazing, but they’re acceptable, which is leagues better than… certain other forms. Stella and Aisha’s are actually my favorite out of the bunch. The Dreamix song is gorgeous and, fittingly, dreamlike. And the transformations are what the Tynix ones should’ve been.

The reason why Dreamix isn’t any higher is because… well, it ain’t very special. They don’t do anything interesting with the concept of Dreamix, like giving it special powers, and as such, it now serves as the baseline of Acceptable.

NUMBER 8, Cosmix:

Cosmix, conceptually, is only marginally acceptable. The Winx have been traveling across the cosmos for… well, the entire show up until this point, but sure, why not have a star-themed transformation? There have been tougher sells. And the outfits are cute. But I’d just like to say these Enchantix-inspired redesigns are far superior.

The song is catchy, but it gets old very fast, especially hearing the chorus over and over… and over. I got sick of this song a long while ago. The spells, likewise, are almost as bad as Mythix, very few in number and incredibly basic. The transformations are alright, but they go a bit too fast for my liking, and they don’t show off the girls' powers or personalities as much as they should. They try to nod to Sailor Moon transformations, but my god do they feel underwhelming.

Again, another basic form that’s nothing special.

NUMBER 7, Onyrix:

Onyrix is a lot like Dreamix with the real-time spells, and the lack of depth given to its concept. What I will say though is that it’s by far one of the most overrated forms. While the outfits themselves are too same-y for my tastes, I actually love the color swaps. Bloom looks awful in pink, but the purplish plums suit her far better. Stella is rocking the moon-inspired turquoise, Flora looks gorgeous in forest green, Tecna pulls off the electric green surprisingly well, and Aisha is stunning in purple. And Musa? SHE IS FINALLY IN RED. THANK. GOD.

The Onyrix song isn’t as good as Dreamix’s, but it’s still nice to listen to, and the sequences are also Tynix, but better. Honestly, Onyrix’s best quality is that it’s proof that sometimes, a good color swap can look great.

NUMBER 6, Bloomix:

It’s kinda funny seeing how far Bloomix has flown up the list since last time. Don’t get me wrong, it still has lackluster spells, a mediocre song, and a terrible way to be earned, but my god, these designs are just so gorgeous I can’t help but adore them. The aesthetic of Bloomix is utterly superior, and it’s easy to see how this form could’ve been the next Enchantix had it been handled properly.

Also, the Bloomix prototype song is leagues better than the final one. I’m still unsure about the vocal effects, but it’s incredibly kickass, which is fitting for a mythical warrior aesthetic. Mythix, eat your heart out. As it stands, Bloomix is the best of the Post-Season 5 transformations solely for its design and potential.

The name still sucks though.

NUMBER 5, Harmonix:

Harmonix has no reason to exist, but thankfully, that’s it’s only problem, and could’ve been salvaged with the Nature’s Key thing. Harmonix has beautiful designs. While they’re still a bit too uniform, the pastel colors are incredibly fitting, and the wings are some of the best, showing that you don’t need wings the size of monster trucks to evoke the idea of a powerful form.

The transformation sequences could do a better job showing the girls’ personalities and powers, but they’re so aesthetically pleasing, especially the way their dresses flow around the girls like water, and the wings start as skirt accessories. The Harmonix song, likewise, is underrated. It’s no “Magic of Sirenix,” but Elisa’s vocals with those harmonies are still great. I do think the production from the prototype was more interesting, given it had more of an underwater tropical vibe.

And by far, Harmonix has the best spells of any transformation. Even the basic attack spells are individualized to fit each girl, with music notes, code, etc. Not to mention amazing spells that deserved to be reused in later forms, like Diapason, Thirteenth Seal, and Shining Mirror.

NUMBER 4, Sirenix:

Sirenix really bombed when it came to the outfits. The high ponytails across the board, the same ugly wings reused on all of them, and the near-identical swimsuit looks? Neo-Sirenix is a slight upgrade to these outfits that are a massive step-down from Harmonix. And its spells are very basic, especially compared to Harmonix. But in the other categories, Sirenix is far superior.

The Sirenix song needs no champion arguing for it. It’s iconic, fits the aquatic vibe of the transformations, and the lyrics are actually interesting. I especially love the line, “Now the Infinite Ocean flows through me like a mystical potion.” I appreciate the references to things like potions.

The transformation sequences in 3D are great and kickass, and while the 2D ones are far too energetic with the girls breaking all of the laws of physics… and their own bones, I appreciate that they at least show off their individual powers. Why is that so uncommon in these transformations?

Not to mention, the curse angle for Sirenix makes it far more interesting in terms of worldbuilding. Overall, just throw the Harmonix spells and designs onto Sirenix, and you’ve got a near-perfect transformation.

NUMBER 3, Believix (Sophix & Lovix):

Another personal regret of mine: being far too mean to Believix. Admittedly, I’m still not too keen on it, again because I feel like the idea of a power based on the belief of magic could’ve had better execution. But in terms of concept, it’s far better than I gave it credit for. It feels like a natural evolution from Enchantix, being focused on protecting and serving the people.

The spells are the same generic energy beams and blasts, but let’s be real: Believix had the best names. Double Eclipse, Dragon Heart, Stereo Crash, just all around excellent names that deserved better visuals. And the special wings are incredibly infuriating, especially in how much time they take up, especially since Tracix could’ve just been a regular power available to Believix fairies.

And while the Gifts of Destiny are obviously cheap attempts at increasing merch sales, I will admit the idea of slight variants of a main form are pretty interesting. Sophix is visually underwhelming - except for Musa and Aisha, god bless - and its song deserved a proper release for those gorgeous vocals. Lovix is more interesting, but my god, the girls look less covered up despite venturing into the arctic circle.

I know I’m dunking a lot on Believix, but it’s just so iconic. The outfits have grown on me, the transformations are incredible, and the song? Divine. God bless Believix.

NUMBER 2, Magic Winx (Charmix):

I excluded the base fairy form last time given how odd it felt alongside the other forms, but Magic Winx is so iconic. The song is one of the best, especially the extended Italian version with verses about each of the Winx and their powers. The outfits are basic, but they work, especially given the fact that since it’s the starting form, we get to see it individualized for every fairy. It can be pretty much any style and still look good.

It also arguably has some of the best spells, like Sonic Blast, Solar Wind, and Golden Pollen. Given it had three whole seasons to shine, this form got lots and lots of cool one-off spells that I honestly wish got to continue into future forms.

We’re also gonna include Charmix here given it’s a booster. I love that it’s earned from overcoming a fear, as it feels like the perfect stepping stone on the way to Enchantix. I love that they’re actually little charms, and that they’re personalized, like Flora’s rose handbag, Musa’s CD player, and Tecna’s transmitter.

Just overall, Magic Winx and Charmix are the perfect starters, and ironically outshine most of the higher-level forms.

MISCELLANEOUS (Comic Forms):

Figured I’d give some time to talk about the miscellaneous comic forms… mostly to make fun of them. Thankfully, Aquatix is gorgeous. It’s basically a mermaid version of the Magic WInx forms, and puts Sirenix to goddamn shame.

But then we have… the others, and with some of the worst names that even fanfiction would be ashamed of inventing. Greenix is… hideous. And another nature-themed transformation? Why? Travelix looks like it should just be a bunch of casual outfits that actually look alright, though the shameless reuse of the season 6 Zenith wings is unforgivable. Especially giving Bloom pink wings instead of red. Shameful. And Paintix? This is a war crime. This somehow looks like a lazier version of Mythix, and I didn’t think that was possible.

Then we get the “Magic Of” transformations, like Magic of Joy. It looks alright, with Greco-Roman style dresses. It oddly seems like a fusion of Harmonix and Butterflix, which honestly, sounds like a nightmare and an insult to Harmonix. Magic of Sport… no. Just no. And the Magic of Rock is likewise hideous. Just put wings on their Winx in Concert outfits and call it a day please.

But perhaps most unforgivable, and most memeable, is… the Magic of Food. Like… transformations based on different food groups. What even? Each Winx gets a food group: Bloom gets Legumes (I don’t know), Stella has Rice and Pasta, Flora has Fruits and Vegetables (at least that makes sense), Musa has Eggs and Meat, Tecna has Milk and Cheese, and Aisha has Fish and Water.  I just… you cannot make this up.

At the very least, the outfits aren’t hideous. I actually really like the hair styles. If you took these designs and used them for something that isn’t a form called the Magic of Food, they’d actually look alright. But this is still better than Butterflix.

NUMBER 1, Enchantix:

No one is surprised. For all eternity, Enchantix shall reign supreme. It’s just how it goes. Gorgeous designs that are cohesive, but still individualized, spells that feel like a natural evolution of the Magic Winx catalog, and great transformations and songs. That full version by Lucia? It’s everything.

The introduction of the Fairy Dust to break dark spells and miniaturize was iconic, and who could forget how each Winx earned her Enchantix? Throwing herself into danger to prove herself worthy of the title of Guardian Fairy? It’s just perfect. Need I say more? Enchantix is perfection.

OUTRO & CONCLUSION:
