I think there's an interesting "pull" in the story where you could interpret Shinichi as being less human, but you could also think of it that Shinichi thinks he's changing because he's experienced such trauma in a short amount of time, and he has such a huge responsibility and a secret he can't share that he automatically feels ostracized from others. The alien parasite part just makes it even worse to figure out.
