Extremely long comment incoming. It won't spoil anything. Just an infodump basically since unless you're paying super close attention and pick up on the small details 95% of the time you're watching, episodes 4 - 7 won't really make sense in a way. Feel free to read or skim through or skip; In episode 4 Subaru died in his sleep due to the fact that he died from a "spell" inflicted upon from an unknown source, and that he was sleeping when it activated. Subaru in episode 5 then repeats the 4 days, but then since he's AWAKE this time at the end of the loop since he wanted to stay awake the entire night to see what killed him in his sleep in episode 4, the "spell" does not just kill him in his sleep like the first time, but rather he now has to experience it when he's awake, causing the symptoms you saw at the end of episode 5 (Stumbling, choking, throwing up, general shit you don't want to happen to you). While he was stumbling around looking for help in the mansion, he heard the sound of chains. He then got hit by something, causing his arm to fly off and for him to go rolling across the hall and floor. The sound of chains then smashed his head open, killing him before the "spell" does. You saw it, lol. Episode 6, searching for clues about the "spell" and the chain, misleading chain sounds because of Roswaal's leg chain's, etc. etc. His conversation in this loop with Beatrice allowed him to find out that some "spells" are more akin to a method of CURSE, in which a type of curse could possibly just put you in a weak state and you die as if "you merely fell asleep" as she put it. He realizes that's what happened to him in episode 4 when he died in his sleep, and in episode 5 the curse activated when he was awake. He also finds the cause of the sounds of the chains that killed him in episode 5 at the end of episode 6, Rem and her ball and chain. Because Subaru had said he was leaving, but then was sitting at the top of a mountain overlooking the mansion with a knife in hand waiting for it to become night time, which is suspicious as fuck, Rem attacked him, which is the time of the maids, as Roswaal bas instated (you see proof of this when he talks to Ram in episode 4). Episode 6 ends. As Subaru was running away from her, his leg gets cut off by WIND magic. Torture and interrogation commence. He then gets his throat slit by WIND magic, killing him, and Rem follows that up with "my sister is too kind." Keep those in mind. She did also have her other reason for doing what she did, with the whole "witch cult" and "one affiliated with the one who caused my sister so much agony," the smell of the witch on him leading her to believe that, which is fair. After he resets, Rem herself dies to this curse that was inflicted upon Subaru, Roswaal saying "it was more of a curse than a spell," then going on to say the stuff about it was if she just fell asleep and died of weakness, just what Beatrice had described it as, and exactly what happened to Subaru in episode 4 when he died in his sleep. He thought Rem was the one who gave the curse to him those two times he had it originally. He was wrong. The curse is still from an unknown source. Ram then fires WIND magic at Subaru as he doesn't speak about the situation, and the anime cuts to when his throat got slit, revealing that RAM was actually there in the forest off-screen, and that she's the one who cut off his leg and slit his throat. A mercy(?) kill since Rem was torturing and interrogating him, and how Ram was acting nice to him the entire time when she didn't really mean anything by it, hence the "my sister is too kind" line. (By the way, they didn't want him to literally save Rem and Ram. They meant give Ram information about what happened so she can avenge Rem. That kind of saving.) It's revealed that in the loop after his throat got slit by Ram and he was having his nightmare, that Rem and Ram were holding his hand in his nightmare to hopefully calm him down. This was indeed done out of kindness, because even though they both really didn't like that he had the witch's stench on him, they didn't know him all that well either (he was just sitting in his room depressed the entire loop after running away upon seeing them at his bed when he reset in the anime, and he wouldn't eat any food they gave him. Emilia actually fed him herself since he was so out of it and scared those four days. He could barely get it down. This is cut light novel content, so it did happen.) so they still felt bad about it, thus the comforting him. The rest is history. He couldn't let them not be whole or have one of them die if they did that for him even if they both absolutely despised him in a way from the moment they first met in a way, so he jumped, and is off to save them. There's a lot of clues to Rem and Ram not trusting/liking him during episodes 4 - 6 that you might catch onto if you ever look back in the future. Episode 7 is one of the best episodes, and is the exact episode that Re:Zero started to get popular. It was more of a sleeper up until then to be honest. Kept getting more and more popular from here on. It's really when the ball gets rolling for the show. Hope this helped you understand what all happened. Thanks for reading.
