this has been debated forever. some say the dragon was "Eating" the prisoners but I disagree, the aliens mouth has no throat to speak of for ingestion, besides a chestburster taking in nutrients/dna from the host i don't thing aliens "eat" anything. I like the idea that they are batteries and their hive in the aliens was actually because they were drawing power from the atmosphere processor.
