297. Directorpiece Theatre: The Mask of Zorro and the Old Hollywood Studio Film

Early Access for patrons!

Adam shines some light on how 1998’s Mask of Zorro represented the end of an era. 1999 was a big year for CG and with it came a whole new paradigm for how Hollywood created blockbusters. Abe is there as well.

Very weird that non-Utahns would be about the Jazz.

“His funny thing is definitely front and center in the trailer” Lol, couldn’t help myself

You can even argue the casting of Banderas, as great as he is, is also whitewashing. Banderas is Spanish, not Mexican. Last I checked Spaniards are still considered white (unless we’re gonna start being REALLY racist again). So this was kinda like casting a British person to play George Washington when you consider the Zorro is typically cast as fighting for Mexican Independence from Spain.

Great point. That really elevates the sequel into the mega-movie tier where money sort of stops mattering because of the guaranteed returns. But thanks for the reminder.

Adam Ganser

The second matrix did have one big set piece, right? Didn’t the build that like 10 mile stretch of highway for that car chase scene?

The director negotiation sounds effing awful.

Wonderful piece mailman! Nice assist John Stockton! Man, I really wish Robert Rodriguez hit the directors seat on this one. That would've been magical. I can't get enough of this series you guys. Love ya.
