526. Ander’s Sons: The Darjeeling Limited

It’s a Wes month. This time we discuss his 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited which tells the story of three brothers embarking on a spiritual journey through their mutual and personal grief. The boys talk about why it feels different from other Anderson films, how grief and romance are treated in Anderson films, and how the writing reveals a genuine desire to interact with Indian culture but ultimately discloses a form of privilege from the writer/director.

and FURTHERMORE, it was sweet to hear Michael mention that Abe's enthusiasm for film has inspired him. I (as a tourist) feel the same, not as much for film, but for story telling.

And I always appreciate it when the beans delve into conversations like the discussion of how ambition, happiness, depression can weave together because I'm a tourist listening to y'all, thinking "Yeah, I relate". I don't think cycles of depression are any more of a waste of time that taking a shit. For some of us, it's just part of the deal that can improved through diet but sometimes you're just going to have to sit there for a minute.

I think the tiger has a layer of specific meaning which ties into the theme of ignorant tourism in that they dismiss it as a lie because where they're from it's an outlandish concern, and not considering whether it's a local concern. And I think the tourism theme is more than a problematic comedic layer. It speaks to pushing into someone's life who has made it clear that they don't want that. From an existentialist perspective, we're all rubes wandering around other people's lives only capable of appreciating things on a superficial level because we've never lived there.

Holy heck, I am pumped! KoK was my favorite podcast and I actually kind of assumed it wasn't going to come back. I wanted to suggest maybe doing just one more episode to see where Shawshank lands on the list or maybe even to hear the Kings' takes on the Black Phone since people say it hits on major King themes. But honestly, I didn't want to come off like a pouty, ungrateful fan since I really enjoy any of the Beans' breakdowns. I mean, I haven't seen much of either Andersons' movies (and I listened to ASS almost begrudgingly), but I found myself really enjoying this season. So yeah, basically everything is great for me and I'll happily check out any of your movie podcasts and I look forward to watching Papa Bear (hopefully in theaters).

cool of Michael to announce the new show. Quentin TarantinNO the show where they will not take a deep dive into the works and life of Quentin Tarantino

I'm a self-confessed Wes Fanderson and I really dislike this movie. It's so exploitative and leans way too heavily on exoticizing India and its people.

Joshua Graves

Great observation! I think we're a bit more cognizant of the great white savior trope these days. I don't recall the movie acknowledging it.

Well the only salve to ease the sting of the end of an anders sons season is the revival of the kings! Mixed emotions on that and this movie. It never really resonated with me, but it's my wife's favorite Wes movie for reasons she can't fully articulate. I guess it's a matter of vibes. Great episode as usual, love you guys!

Wondering what you make of the mother being a nun in India to “help” people whose country’s main religion is Hinduism and is only 2% Christian according to current googling. I found it offensive and wondered if the film pointed that out at all.
