Movie Production Diary #41 (Now, With Video!)
Added 2022-01-26 14:01:03 +0000 UTCAs we recently announced, we're making a movie and a true crime podcast, and we're making them in full view of you, our Patrons. Today, we worked on the movie! In this episode, Michael and Abe discuss some feedback from actual furs as well as watch a video showing a recent index of the zeitgeist’s feelings toward furs.
For the second part, we’re trying something new. After you’ve heard the diary, feel free to watch this extra video of Michael and Abe watching a vtuber ask fur streamers questions about furrydom:

2022-02-01 17:57:49 +0000 UTCI agree. I appreciate you’re adding that Hank gets to be Hank. But you’re right, it could be presented in way that doesn’t indicate by mistake that Hank represents all furries, or gay men, all bears, or indeed all anyone. Yes, all furries are named Hank lol

2022-01-27 20:24:12 +0000 UTCCaveats up front: I've only had access for a month so I've only heard 3 diaries and have just started reading the screenplay last night. Plus I'm not a furry. I really appreciated how the criticism you've received on the representation was centered on this episode and you seem genuinely interested in absorbing it. I think that one place where even subtle adjustments or rearrangement might make a difference to someone approaching this with a justifiably apprehensive perspective is the opening scene where Hank is explaining his furriness to Trey. Although, to me, this is a character telling another character about their personal experience and setting up the story, someone who is coming in with stakes might be foremost be looking at how those stakes are going to represented. Hank tells Trey that he is gay and that seems to be the main info he's presenting. He even refers to being a furry as a hobby. This is Hank's truth and Hank should Hank as Hank would Hank. Since he's trying to frame this info for Trey, could he specifically mention some of the furries he's connected with in order for Trey to see how important this is to Hank socially? This would also allow to present anecdotal experience of other furry experiences upfront (furry/not gay, furry from birth, furry and sober). Not in depth character study, simply casually mentioning experiences other than Hank's here at the beginning. Or breaking Hank's info dump up a little. He tells Trey that he's gay, dessert arrives, he tells Trey he's also a furry. Hank still Hanks but there's conceptual space put between info that someone might think is being conflated. In conclusion, so you're saying that all furries are named Hank, right?

2022-01-27 16:02:38 +0000 UTCI’m not a furry but the ruining of the fur suit did strike me as one of the biggest reasons to not like Trey as I’ve been listening to these diaries, regardless of the circumstances. I love the idea of the hyena suit visually, but it could also be an ocean animal, as a quick fix to the script, and made to be somewhat waterproof that way. It might be something Trey connects with more as well, since he’s a strong swimmer. Or I thought it’d be a cute scene to have Trey apologizing to the woman outside the convention, and then in the wrap up or during the end credits to see Trey helping the woman fix the suit or making a new one.

2022-01-27 00:22:18 +0000 UTCI know I’m related, but I too am impressed by your kindness, which is paramount in your reception of criticism. That kindness is reflected in the script, and how open you are to feedback.

2022-01-26 18:35:49 +0000 UTCThank you. We all strive to be better everyday. We're already planning on reaching out and having a chat with him to get a more full picture. And yesterday, we watched "The Fandom" together, which was both very humbling (in respect to there's always more to learn) and a reminder that no subculture is a monolith. We truly feel we're allies but need to always make sure we're listening to the community as to what that means. On top of all that, we will always fight to serve the story we wish to tell.

2022-01-26 17:52:27 +0000 UTCContinuing to love these production diaries! I just want to express how it never ceases to amaze me the way that you both act in good faith and always strive to make the thing into the best thing that it can be. Most people would have reacted in a very negative way to the type of criticism from that first guy. They would have spent the whole time trying to justify how the critic was wrong, and how they in turn were correct. But you guys actually considered their argument and weighed the points made. And you even had positive take aways from the experience. You are both amazing in this respect. On every level taking this movie production journey with you guys has been a delight and an inspiration!
