As to why Pennywise cocoons some kids and just munches on others… welll… In the book, no kid was taken like Beverly in the movie. She wasn’t taken at all in the book—that would have meant death. Although, Bill’s wife Audra was cocooned and lived—she was kept alive to torment and manipulate Bill, whom Pennywise perceived as the only real threat in The Losers. In any case, it appeared the victim kids were all killed on the spot—though some, like Patrick Hockstetter, were dragged dead into the sewer for noshing and num-nums (though his body remained recognizable). Georgie “only” had his arm bitten off in the book, but his body was recovered (seconds after death). As to needing meat or fear, while Pennywise talked about the fear seasoning the meat and kids had the purest fears and thus the best taste, it always seemed his true sustenance came from the fear it caused, up to and including death. The bodies of most of those killed were seen (like Patrick—though 11/22/63 suggested the police found his body when they hadn’t) and many were recovered. They were bitten and pecked and the like but, as i said. recognizable. This suggests the true feeding was more psychic than physical. Given that being eaten alive seems to be a base instinctual terror for humans (and most organisms), the act of eating is a just another means to an end: manifesting fear.

Should have known better than to type a long post on the Patreon app on my phone which will clear your text if you dont post in a certain amount of time. Long story short, not a fan of this adaptation. If anyone is more curious about IT lore from the novel Ive read it 6 times and fancy myself a bit of a historian on the subject.
