The Autism Constellation

I have grown from an autistic child who needed weekly lessons from a childhood psychiatrist in order to learn how to make eye contact, into an autistic adult who is flying high in an aeroplane made out of comprehensive coping mechanisms.

The way I have made sense of my life, is to find repeated patterns and groupings of traits, the same as we do for the night sky. There does appear to be a unifying autistic core trait, however, which surprised me:

Detail-oriented thinking.

---

This video was SO DIFFICULT TO WRITE! Such a varied and nuanced condition, which we still know so little about. However, I don't need to know the underlying cause to build and test strategies, scientifically and obsessively.

Hope it's informative folks, I'd love to hear what you think!

Tris :-)

EDIT 2024-03-15

aka "Video1COPYCOPYCOPY(1)FINAL.mp4" !

Apologies all, there were a LOT of visual errors in the first version, please accept my apologies and this re-edit. It's almost the same script, so you don't need to watch again unless you like shiny new graphics.

While making these changes I discovered, and then got very over-excited with, the Advanced Slides background customisation - it accepts a transparency value!

<!-- slide bg="[[autism-infinity.png]]" data-background-opacity="0.1" -->

I then did what anyone would do, and put in a subtle background image at 10% transparency to indicate which of the 3 chapters in the video each slide is. Good? Bad? Distracting? Helpful?

Thank you so much, Tris

Of course! I'm overwhelmed by the response to this, and that I can now do this full-time, and not chase adverts (which would mean no Autism video!). Thank you so much for your support :-)

I'm so pleased it's useful. The two books I linked at the end of the video are both INCREDIBLE, if you've not read them, I'd highly recommend them :-)

You a G for making 1$ the minimum so that many people can fund something big for you with something small

I have a young daughter with autism, I appreciated this, it gave me a better idea of how her perspective differs.

Jason

So glad it resonates with you - I get so annoyed with myself if I make the same mistake twice, I use this technique all the time!

As another Software Developer slowly figuring out in adulthood that she fits a lot of the autistic elements, the incident report is a tool I so didn't think about bringing home from work to use in this instance. I'm absolutely going to be taking that advice, thanks~

Oh I bet it has. I mentioned it in passing as a trait folks would be familiar with - do you think it's important to switch up my language here?

Excellent video btw, didnโ€™t mean to nitpick. Now Iโ€™d love to see you do one on Apophenia, for counterpoint.

8:34 you say Superpower when you meant Disability (sorry: hypersensitivity to contradictory data is another symptom ๐Ÿ™‚)

Fantastic video. Only bit of (minor, nitpicky) feedback is that I *believe* the concept of "learning styles" has been debunked. Happy to be proven wrong though!

Thank you so much, it's my pleasure! I highly recommend reading Unmasking Autism to understand more, especially with family affected. :-)

Great video, question tho, is the weird numbering around 13:18 intentional? I assume it's some kind of joke that I missed.

Csala Bรกlint

Well done!

Thank you for this video, Tris. My daughter and her mom are both autistic and this sheds light on how they experience the world. I think autism definitely can be a superpower instead of being seen as a problem, so long as individuals know themselves and how their minds work.
