Mentoring FAQ

Introducing: Mentoring tiers!

If you're subscribed already, book here!

The spaces are limited so that I can give everyone I mentor the time they deserve, and I'd hate for you who support me to miss out, if you would like to take advantage of it.

Check out the new 'Mentoring' tiers here: https://www.patreon.com/noboilerplate

If you would like to discuss your needs before signing up, please email (rather than Patreon message) contact@noboilerplate.org

FAQ

# What Topics Can We Talk about?

Anything I talk about in my video:

# How Do I Sign Up For Mentoring?

For my sanity, the only way at the moment is by Patreon. But I'm not trying to hook you into an expensive subscription! If you want just one session, you cancel (or switch!) your tier after it, that's totally cool.

After you sign up, read the welcome message for instructions on how to book your first session.

# What Are the Rates, When Will I Be Charged?

My rates are $250 per session per month. Patreon will charge you immediately, then every month on the date you subscribed.

# Can We Have More Than One Session Per Month?

Yes, but no more than one a week (once per fortnight on the Scholarship tier). Book your first one normally, and we'll discuss your needs, and then you can increase your pledge in multiples of $250 if we both think that's right for us.

# What Are Your Hours?

Generally, though I'll remove slots if I have personal stuff going on, they are:

Mondays 13:00 - 17:30
Tuesdays 13:00 - 17:30
Wednesdays 13:00 - 17:30
Thursdays 13:00 - 17:30
Fridays 13:00 - 16:00

Times are London UK, if you're west of me, you'll probably want a time in your morning, and if you're east, you'll most likely want a time in your evening.

# Why Are There No Slots?

I only open up slots about 28 days in advance (who can tell where we'll all be beyond then!)

Alternatively, the slots might be all booked up. If this continues for many weeks, please email me, or join the waitlist tier.

# Is There A Waitlist For The Mentoring Tiers?

YES! I have recently added a $1 tier called "DEV + Mentoring Waitlist". Join that tier to be notified when I have availability 24 hours before I announce it publicly. Sorry it's $1, I couldn't make it cheaper, but thank you in advance for your support.

If you wait for many months, feel free to email me, that sounds odd.

# I Want Mentoring, But I'm Uncertain If This Is The Right Option For Me

No problem, email me, and we'll figure it out. I only enjoy teaching something I'm passionate and good at, if I can't help you, perhaps I can send you some links to help you figure it out for yourself!

# I've Got This Code That I Need Help With

Incredible! Check it in to a private GitHub repo ready for sharing with me in the mentoring session.

I am happy to use any git repo, but only the GitHub website. GitLab at a push.

I have standardised on Visual Studio Code Liveshare for pair programming. As you will have heard me say, "popularity matters", and the most popular tooling, for better or worse, is vscode! Rust analyzer is the standard lsp, too, and that works great in vscode.

(I have discovered that I can't set up everything that all my mentees use, I have had to standardise. I'm a neovim person, running rust_analyzer inside it, but use vscode when collaborating.)

If all else fails, you can share your screen, whatever editor you're using, and we can talk it out!

# How Should I Prepare For The Session?

Please wear headphones and sit in a quiet location where we can chat uninterrupted. I wrote a blog post in 2020 about how to best set up your webcam and camera, and the advice is still valid should you need it https://www.0atman.com/articles/20/wfh-advice

If you do nothing else, please wear headphones.

The first session I'm more relaxed about time, so if we have connection problems, or audio difficulties or whatnot, don't panic!
