Mario 64 is an awesome game to jump into considering how much it's influence can be still felt today. Still feels amazing to play too, especially on more modern ports with the frame-rate increased. If you're looking for another Mario game at some point after finishing Mario 64, I'd recommend Super Mario Galaxy as a follow-up, it's got this incredible atmosphere that I haven't felt in many other games, much less another Mario game lol.
