Angelus has passion, as distinguished from love (though Spike, who is soulless, has potential for a form of love). BtVS deconstructs these words/ideas we all, too easily, throw around, even the word “soul”.

2025-11-02 10:34:18 +0000 UTCWhen talking about this episode, Joss explained the reason for why Angelus snapped Jenny's neck, as opposed to feeding on her or something similar. To use a simple, mundane method of killing her, it puts paid to any notion of Ms. Calendar ever being resurrected or brought back as a vamp. She is just dead, beyond any hope of return. Her death both served the story's needs, and put the audience once again on notice that "plot-armor" is paper-thin and any character, even our favorite main cast characters, was vulnerable. It makes the stakes real for everyone.

Otherwise the lights would've been on :P Angelus does have passion even without humanity. It's just passion for inhumane things. Torture, killing, emotional devastation.He really really likes these things more than most vamps... Which is why he's dragging it out. He wants to savor the pain as long as he can.

Great reaction, can tell you're really getting into the show at this point. The WORK Angel put into the staging is something else, he's not just a vampire but a really patient, sadistic, and artistic vampire. I like how Jenny's death isn't for shock value; it's narratively driven with meaning and purpose, choices and consequences. This and Innocence are probably the best written episodes so far, and still two of my favorites of the show (with many more to come). Anthony Head's acting when he sees Jenny dead on his bed is so subtle and affecting. Without any words or excessive reactions you can see how it shocks and breaks him in that moment. Buffy hugging Giles in the alley crying together still gets to me.
