One of my favourite episodes ... fantastic acting. Giles, Snyder and Joyce really found their inner teenager. It is interesting to hear your comparisons of the episodes wrt modern episodes. British TV series of the time were mostly like US series have become now ... about 6 to 10 episodes long. Most US series with 20 to 24 episodes had a procedural format, where the same formulae was repeated week after week, and there was very little serial long-term story telling. BtVS ploughed new ground, with its "monster of the week" and "big bad season arc" espisodes - in fact these terms are sometimes still used, even when the show is not supernatural, and does not have literal "monsters" or "big bads". ... BtVS with its arcs which found resolution within a season, were a reaction against the X-Files, with its long rambling multi-series story telling that didn't resolve. I slightly disagree about what we learn from this episode ... it contributes a significant, if small, amount to our understanding of the mayor.
