The voice actors for the members of Vox Machina in the show are in fact the people who played the characters on Critical Role. So they are basically replaying the original story that came out of their game sessions. Matt Mercer, who as the DM (Dungeon Master) played all the other characters in the game, voices a lot of side characters and a notable villain in the show. The show is an unexpected success story, as was the Critical Role stream. Most of the first season was funded via Kickstarter, then Amazon got involved. There are now two seasons out (the second better than the first) and a third one is confirmed, as well as a second show based on another Critical Role campaign (The Mighty Nein).
