UNEDITED: Buffy the Vampire Slayer 5x14 reaction

Comments

"It's funnier if it's true." I really liked this episode when it was released back in 2000, and I think it still holds up. While the little shipper in me would have liked a some emotions from Buffy towards Spike, she clearly isn't there, and for good reason. As Marty mentioned, the episode telegraphs its credo early on with the Quasimodo reference. Yes, Spike has changed, but all he's changed he did to appeal to Buffy, not to be a better person. In order for him to become a viable partner for anyone (apart from Dru ;-)), let alone Buffy, he needs to act selflessly more. Buffy now knows his feelings (even though she denied that soulless creatures can love, all evidence to the contrary), and as she's made it as clear as possible that she doesn't reciprocate these feelings, it will be interesting to see how Spike reacts to this and the fact that changing his ways just for her sake doesn't work.

What a banger episode!! As all spikes centric episodes are. One of my favourite of the seasons. I loved this, James marsters is an incredible theatre actor and he’s given so much good material to shine. Also, I love all of his “relationships” in the show, buffy and spike have so much chemistry, but also him and dru are iconic and seeing them together again made me so happy. About Spuffy, whatever buffy might be feeling for spike, she wouldn’t admit it. Spike is technically a monster, and this episode makes it pretty clear, early in the episode he was compared to Quasimodo, while tara was describing Quasimodo’s actions selfishly motivated, spike is capable of emotions and feelings, but he doesn’t know how to expressing it in a healthy way, to quote drusilla “he can love quite well, if not wisely. Everything he did in this episode is very problematic, and if spike was a regular human we wouldn’t encourage this behaviour and we would condemn it as it’s abusive af, yet he’s not a regular human, and buffy isn’t either in a way, so we could say that the normal rules don’t really apply to their relationship, because there’s a level of equality, if anything buffy is stronger than him and could end him any moment, especially now that he has the chip and can’t defend himself. Still, buffy wouldn’t go there, because he’s evil and she has way too high morals to even consider the possibility.
