Well the 4:3 vs 16:9 change is a bit of a story. The short version is all of Buffy sans one episode and angel seasons one and two were framed for 4:3 and that’s the preferred format to watch. It’s also intended to be watched without the previously ons except on a couple of episodes. Releases on dvd and streaming are generally completely messed up which is why there’s so much chatter when people start the show about using good versions that have been restored to as original a format as possible. There’s one season (angel season 2) that doesn’t have an original format version unless you go back to the first airings and a handful of episodes that have some changes. Buffy 2x07, for instance, had music replaced after its first airing. The releases in various countries were so messed up the Buffy season 4 dvds in the US included a note explaining the whole situation and what the writers intended formats were.
