UNEDITED: Buffy the Vampire Slayer 6x14 Reaction

Comments

I don't know that it's THAT obscure. It's one of the classics, up there with To Serve Man and Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, all of which get referenced quite a lot, even today.

Xander's "cornfield" remark refers to a classic Twilight Zone episode, in which a six year old boy suddenly develops god-like mental powers and is able to wish for anything that he wants. Among other things, he kills adults who anger him and wishes them away into a nearby corn field. It's a fairly obscure pop culture reference, even by Buffyverse standards (that Twilight Zone episode was from 1962, forty years before 6x14 aired). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krN6DF3I3qo

Halfrek recognised Spike because she is Cicely - the woman that Spike wrote poetry about and who said he was "beneath her" in S5 Fool For Love flashback to Spike's origin. It was thought for many years that this was before she became a vengeance demon but was later confirmed in a Spike comic that she was already a vengeance demon when she first met Spike. In 1889 when he leaves the party after everybody mocks "William the Bloody for his bloody awful poetry" he wishes they would all be "bloody" to which Halfrek announces "wish granted". Suddenly, everyone at that party begins bleeding from their eyes unbeknownst to Spike who was busy being sired by Drusilla that same night. (We also learned that Spike's real full name is William Pratt)
