Damn it, I just went to edit my wall of text comment and accidentally deleted it instead. Cabaret is one of my all time favourite movies, I believe it was one of the first musicals to deal with such dark subject matter as apathy in the face of rising Nazism in the Weimar Republic. The end song as well is just so perfectly sung by Liza Minelli, on the surface it seems like a fun party song, and invitation to the Cabaret, until you realise her character is actually singing about accepting an early death from sex, drugs, and alcohol. Joel Grey is wonderful as the emcee, especially with his character more or less representing both a stand in and a reflection of German society at the time. A wonderful, thought provoking, and intelligent film, so glad you enjoyed it.

2023-11-30 15:27:50 +0000 UTCIt’s a strangely constructed movie, might be due to it being based on a musical or just because it’s half a century old. But I liked it and I probably wouldn’t have checked it out without this reaction.
