The final scene here confirms that that the misdirect in the finale wasn't that Spike went to get the chip out and had the soul forced on him like you and we thought but that he sought out and endured the trials to gain his soul on purpose. When you go back and listen there is some purposely ambiguous phrases like "get what's coming to her" and "restored to your former self" and they sound at first like it could be about the chip but looking back you see he was actually talking about getting the soul .

2023-12-14 19:26:38 +0000 UTCThat last scene may be my favorite Spike performance of the entire series. The episode you are trying to remember is 5x07 "Fool for Love" where his love interest tells him "you are beneath me" and then later in the episode Buffy tells him the same thing.
