Hm, just watched this episode and your reaction. I’m glad you liked it, I wasn’t really gripped. It’s not bad but to me it managed to feel both too slow and too crowded. Some of it is probably due to a large cast and trying to establish a lot in the first episode and some due to the fragmented story-telling. The story about the mother didn’t work well as horror for me; it was so straight forward—no mystery, no prolonged dread, just her getting out of her grave, going for a short walk and killing her old boss. BTW, you seem to have missed that after Dupin said “I won’t turn around”, a shadowy figure in the corner behind him leaves the room. The court-room scene was the weakest for me. Especially after praising Dupin’s opening argument beforehand, I found it quite disappointing. He came off more like an over-eager young lawyer and not like an experienced attorney opening a major federal case. I liked the scenes introducing the children the most. I’m far more interested in their lives than Roderick’s (presumably) death-bed confession and whatever brought a curse upon the family. Since there isn’t much else on right now (shout out to “Our Flag Means Death”, which you really should watch), I’ll probably give this another one or two episodes to see how it develops.
