I like the writing on each show, although I may be more biased in regards to the Expanse screenplays because I had read the novels prior to watching the series. It's possible that my brain could have automatically filled in any story gaps across various Expanse episodes because of my familiarity with the material. Anyway, it doesn't have to be a zero-sum game of which show is better - folks can (and should) enjoy them both!

I think The Expanse has spectacular character driven stories--it's simply that the show's seasons have more succint overall story arcs, as it has fewer characters to serve. I wouldn't say it's better than BSG--but I think it's just as good. The shows go about their respective stories in very different manners.

Btw, Buffy writer Jane Espenson became a writer and producer for Battlestar Galactica in seasons 3 and 4 of the series. Also, I heard your comment about wishing there was a newer incarnation of BSG; well in a way there kind of is one. The Expanse (which aired for 6 seasons from 2015 to 2022) is very similar in many ways to BSG: a gritty sci-fi drama with a great ensemble cast, excellent production values, and stellar writing.
