I know what Kassidy means by people stealing things from Xena.
That’s why there’s the slogan “Xena Did It First!” in the fandom. A lot of “influence” was taken from Xena with Buffy and Charmed too. But I don’t necessarily see it as stealing. It’s just a passing on of the baton in women empowerment, so to speak.
I mean if you think about it you can also cite earlier media with Xena taking influence as well. Like Wonder Woman. It’s just the natural progression of taking what works and running with it and improving on what doesn’t. Xena’s no different.

I know exactly why it bothers you that they have male love interests because I feel the same way. The show does feel very off when they involve the romance aspects because the whole point is to show how women can be independent. That they don’t need a romance to be whole or complete people. But the theme of love in general is an important theme to explore and teach. I agree, It doesn’t have to be a romantic love. But what’s really the problem in it being romantic? There isn’t a problem really, it just has to be better written and handled than this every other episode method.
You’ll find that it works when it works and other times, it doesn’t. And I’m not elaborating on what I mean by that.

I've seen Van Helsing many times, and that comparison has never occurred to me, that I can recall. ... Charon, the ferryman of the River Styx, was played by Michael Hurst, who you know as Iolaus, best friend of Hercules. Charon is another character already established on Herc, showing up here. ... Nice bit of continuity, with not only Marcus, but Toxeus showing up.

As few have said before, just get through season 1. The writers for the most part get a good hand on the characters & audience by end of season 1. You're going to get so much less of the boyfriends of the week and when they do occur, they will largely make sense and be in character. gabrielle & Xena are only dependent on eachother.
