Yeah it sucks.... I think for the most part though, it was one of the last, "guy of the week" episodes they continued the trend of limiting those episodes through out the rest of the series. It is a shame, maybe if they just wrote them just helping him then did more of the actual story, might of been better. Although I think budgeting could of limited the possibility of illustrating a big story like the one of Ulysses. Though I do love you reaction, it's nice seeing my reactions mirrored lmao

2024-08-11 18:55:59 +0000 UTCThere’s no way to make ‘Ulysses’ make sense. Even Lucy hates that episode and her performance in it. I wish I could just tell her “look, the naff writing let yours and his character down, it’s not your fault” but you know what she’s like. A perfectionist. Always blaming herself for the shortcomings of everybody else. Just like Xena. The only thing people care about in this episode is The Green-eyed Monster. And no, I’m not talking about Poseidon. How natural and organic the scenes between Xena and Gabrielle are compared to the forced and contrived scenes between Xena and Ulysses is a real joke. Gabrielle’s face when she overhears Ulysses telling Xena he thinks she’s his soulmate and asking her to stay in Ithaca with him. She’s not a happy Bard. We’re not a happy audience.

2024-08-10 20:07:21 +0000 UTCKnowing the fate of any man that shows a romantic interest in Xena or Gabrielle, if he would have left home he probably would've died 10 minutes later 😆 he better stay home alright

2024-08-10 17:49:28 +0000 UTCHa. You're right, I think Ulysses could have worked if he was cast differently. If it was someone with a mischievous charm but still ultimately good...kind of like autolycus. I still wouldn't buy xena being ready to settle down with them, but I could see her being charmed by Ulysses if portrayed that way. This Ulysses unfortunately was a block of wood whose only positive character trait was...his dad jokes.

2024-08-10 16:53:52 +0000 UTCYou're so right, it could've maybe worked but Ulysses is so dull and boring that nobody's buying it.. Funny enough, there was a Tumblr poll about the worst thing that Xena has ever done naming various atrocities she has committed, but kissing Ulysses won ha!

2024-08-10 15:19:57 +0000 UTCThis is definitely not a fan favorite episode lol. It's not even particularly bad on the surface- it's a run of the mill mediocre episode. The placing of it is just so bizarre as it doesn't fit where any of the characters are at this point in the story. That's what truly makes it bad. It's not even the gabrielle & Xena of it all. I don't mind that because we don't know where they are in their relationship. Maybe they've not labeled what they are and it's just friends fooling around to Xena. Xena definitely reads as typically non-monogamous or polyamorous in her past. Maybe Xena doesn't think she's worthy of gabrielle and is panic hopping to a new relationship. Whatever, I can see it. MY ISSUE is that Xena in 2 universes would never be into Ulysses! We've established her type by now in this show. She likes her men ruthless, ambitious, alot of the times a little evil. The Ceasars, ares petrocles, borias & Marcus before they reformed. Not this dollar store hercules knockoff. I'm also not going to even get started on how they made this great, epic, mythological hero in Ulysses kinda...slimy this episode. He dropped his wife who he fought 10 years to return to at the drop of a dime. Smh.

2024-08-10 14:59:38 +0000 UTCYeah I agree, it sounds like Xena was trying to be in a polyamorous relationship ("the 3 of us could do some good") but hey she draws the line at the guy being married, so good for her

2024-08-10 14:35:37 +0000 UTC"And the head coach/Wants no sissies/So he reads to us from something called Ulysses." I don't believe there are any bad episodes in the first three seasons of Xena, but this one, for me (and not just me) is among the lower ranked entries. I know why some people, especially, don't like it. My own interpretation of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship does not inherently exclude a relationship like what Xena potentially could have had with Ulysses. ... Finally, after almost two whole seasons of him being in the opening credits, Poseidon shows up!
