PATREON ONLY: Xena Warrior Princess 3x01 Reaction

Comments

In the commentary track for this episode, Rob Tapert said that they had planned for Ares to be the father originally, but they backed out of that idea mid-production because of the incestuous implications with Ares and Hercules and re-wrote it, they didn't want that for the Xena universe.. he also admits that this episode is quite pointless, and he is right.. cool fight scene tho

I agree this had to be such a fun episode for Lucy to shoot. I like that they left it ambiguous with Ares whether or not he's Xena father. Although I favor/believe he's not and she held up in the fight because he has a soft spot for her, the weird familial attraction/dynamic would be right on par for greek mythology unfortunately.

Yeah, I agree that to explain Xena's skills by making her a demi-goddess is weak... I just think that she and all of the other mortals that can fight and defy gravity and do impossible feats are just cool badasses like that, no explanation neccessary

I just explain it as an unreliable narrator in Gabrielle’s Xena Scrolls. Just some emphasising and embellishing here and there. But there are many ways to explain it.

I tend to discount those things as simply feats which are possible in that universe, which is clearly not this universe. I almost HAVE to explain it that way, because Xena's not the only person who does things that shouldn't be possible. (And I don't believe the ultimate decision of the show was to have Xena be more than human.)

This is also the season where we really delve into Xena’s struggle with suicidal ideation and this first episode really sets the tone for that. The fact when she believes she’s all out of options all she can do to put it right is to die. It’s heavy-handed but handled well. We saw a little bit of this last season where when she took a mortal injury to the head, she begged Niklio to let her die. To not heal her and save her life. And we see she does this because she’s reliving her past in her memory. This matters a great deal so keep this in mind when watching Season 3.

A good explanation is that Ares has a soft spot for her - which he does. But that still doesn’t explain all the other crazy in-human stuff she can do.

The original intent of this episode was to leave no doubt that Ares was, indeed, Xena's biological father. Obviously, they changed their minds. The result was more ambiguous, but also more confusing. I have never believed that Xena was anything but mortal, and not related to Ares in any way. The best explanation for Xena being able to fight Ares, I think, is that Ares was not fighting her as hard as he could. (Which he wasn't.) This episode isn't a great one for me, but I don't believe that any episode in the first three seasons is bad.

There’s plenty of ways to explain Xena’s ‘’many skills” than that she might be a Demi-God and specifically Ares’ daughter. I admit. It makes sense. But so does “Gabrielle wrote the Scrolls”. An unreliable narrator is just as good an explanation as Half-God Xena.

If Gabrielle ever wants Xena to do anything… all she had to do was bribe or reward her with her dumplings. Why are these two so married? Jesus. Your wife really wants those dumplings, Gabrielle. She gonna win.
