Not much a fan of these heist/teaming up episodes, but I guess this is one of the better ones.. but there's another one of these this season that I always skip because it annoyes me so much 😆 the X/G moments here are really good though

That’s the second time Xena’s mentioned dealing with Ares in the past before meeting Gabrielle but we learn in ‘The Reckoning’ that Xena didn’t even know what he looked like: so either he came to her under an impersonation of someone else - which we know he can do as ‘Ties That Bind’ shows us - and any correspondence she had with him was through her army and not personally and directly - or - they’ve changed that detail following a show that’s now found its feet in what it’s supposed to be and they figured Xena being guided by Ares in the past personally and directly was the right way to go for her journey of seeking redemption to really mean something. But I go back and forth on it all the time just as I do with whether Ares is her real father or not and whether Xena and Gabrielle are a couple at this point in the show or not. But that’s the great thing about this TV show though. You are free to interpret the narrative or the lore or even the relationships any which way you want… It’s part of what makes TV shows like this better than anything recent and “so genuine” as you put it. It’s because they focussed on character over plot. When the narrative wraps around the characterization rather than the opposite way around - absolute magic happens. Timeless magic. Look at all the cult classics of the 90’s/early 00’s. What do they all have in common? They’re character-driven instead of plot-driven. The plot is still very important but it’s not so important as to neglect character representation and development. And - in fact - both come about very naturally and organically because they always wrap the then-plot or then-narrative around the then-characterization rather than forcing the characters to fit into a plot or narrative not meant for them or makes no sense for them - which is what a lot of TV shows today do with their characters. They just wrap any characters around the story of what’s going on and that’s just the wrong way to do it. You always ALWAYS wrap the plot/narrative/story arc around the CHARACTERS because that way you do get a genuine experience. This episode might be a bit of a dud for Xenaverse standards… but it’s still leagues better than the best of anything you could watch today because character > > > plot.

Yeah. This one’s a bit of a dud from Steven, I have to say. Every now and again though - he does have them. Still interesting with the female assassin hating men thing though. This was one of the things that showed me they were serious about depicting true feminism.

I always forget about this episode but it's not bad. Unfortunately just comes after a really great one in 'Been there done that' and before one of the most important archs of the show. Still a fun watch though.

Now this season will be a hell of a ride in the best way possible

It's fairly clear, I think, that this episode should have taken place sometime AFTER the next one (based on dialogue in "The Deliverer") but it didn't, for whatever reason. Anyway, it's a pretty good installment, with a formidable opponent, and some armor that looks strikingly similar to armor that was seen in Hephaestus' workshop in an episode of Hercules. I believe Charles Measure based his portrayal of Darnell on how Kevin Smith played Ares, at least as far as the swagger is concerned.
