You do in a way. Through an AU.

Yeah! I can work with this line of thinking. I don't hate the episode at all. (Actually, it's been a while, but I don't recall really hating *any* episode. Though, I suppose I'll jog my memory as I go through this series again. 😬 Something is bound to come up lol). As you had also mentioned, I just don't think it was executed very well--at least not when you hold it up to several other episodes through the run of the show. I still would have loved to have seen the moments of Xena's early days before she left Amphipolis, though.

Despite this episode being such an important one for learning Xena’s backstory and why she became the way she was as an evil doer it’s actually one of the worst episodes in the whole show. It has a strong concept - even has some strong dialogue here and there about the theme of vengeance and the mark it leaves on you when you spend your whole life attempting to satiate those feelings - but ultimately it isn’t executed very well. The episode before this one, ‘Callisto’, does a much better job with this theme and it’s why it’s ranked as one of the best episodes in the whole show. Probably because “The Creator” feels more justified in ‘Callisto’ than it does in this episode. You can definitely understand how Xena could “create” Callisto but you can’t really understand how Cortese could “create” Xena. It’s why I prefer to interpret him differently to the canon explanation of him. As I said below to Koz - other factors tie into “creating” evil Xena. Don’t think of Cortese as the catalyst of Xena’s turning evil, just the web spinner of her downfall into her dark past. It’s not necessarily one person that does it. It’s many + a God. Same as you shouldn’t think of Hercules as Xena’s catalyst into turning good. He’s a factor, yes - but someone else better fits that role and deserves that credit. When it comes to evil Xena, what matters is not the trigger of events but the constant encouraging of staring down the barrel of the gun. Not only one person is responsible for making Xena the way she was but there is only one person responsible for keeping Xena on the path that she is on now. “Keeping her on it” are the key words here.

Yes. That is the problem with Cortese’s character when it comes to him having the significant impact on Xena that he did. But I just think of him as what spun Xena’s web out of order rather than what created her. I think that was other people in her life and other circumstances played into truly making her evil. I can’t talk about those yet though.

Gabrielle was the best part of this episode and her soaking in all of Xena's teachings to be a warrior. I liked the idea of Cortes as the impetus of Xena's rise as a warlord and her brother Toris in theory, but I think it was excuted kinda blandly and made not terribly interesting.

🤣 HA! "Now, if that's all I'll just be practicing with my staff. END of discussion... I'm sorry you had to witness that, Toris." I love Gabrielle so much. I think this episode of fun, though after seeing it again I think it would have been kind of neat to see just a few episodes that went into even more detail on Xena's earliest years before she left Amphipolis. I imagine it would be a fantastic tale to see on screen. Xena clearly loved her mother, her brothers, and her home so it must have been a great, though tragic, story. It would have been cool to see how she went from a someone who was just trying to defend her home to the person she became. Though on a humorous note, you think you would have heard Cortes' and Toris' names pop up more throughout the show if they were so important to her haha! If I recall Lyceus is mentioned several times throughout the show.

Obviously, this episode delves into an important part of Xena's backstory. It also gives us a lot of fun Gabrielle stuff. And Toris does, indeed, resemble his sister. I think it's the hair. Cortese is a bit of a lightweight, which might seem odd for the man who drove Xena to "take up the sword," but everyone has their own rich tapestry.

Koz

This week on ‘They’re So Married’ A bold as brass Bard tells off the deadly ex-Destroyer of Nations. Xena’s amused over Gabrielle having the audacity to talk to her like that when the men in her army would think twice about doing such a dangerous thing.  In other news… Xena has another brother… But that’s not important...
