2024-06-16 12:45:19 +0000 UTCJust a PSA here. It was around this time that Lucy Lawless broke her leg doing a horse stunt on the late show, so the second season suffers a little from that. Episodes get re arranged, they have to work around lucy not being able to do stunts etc. So if you notice anything feeling a bit off, or the emotional continuity in the story telling being a bit weird, it could be a result of that. On this episode though. I think xena letting callisto die is the first real 'oh shit' moment in the show. She's not Hercules or buffy or the typical 'hero' . We've only scratched the surface with xena at this point, and getting to know her, understanding her darkness, learning more about her past. She's such a fascinating character. Love the reactions :)

I wouldn’t have it any other way.” So very straight. 😂 This show knows exactly what it’s doing with this scene and the dialogue. This show is gay because only a gay show can make even a straight-sex situation gay. I wouldn’t have it any other way either.

The queer stuff is the intentional and authentic stuff. Xena is straight-baiting. It’s using the male love interests to illustrate the depth and intensity of the love between Xena and Gabrielle. I love how conflicted Xena feels this whole episode. Not just at Gabrielle marrying Perdicus, but also at Callisto murdering Perdicus. And yes, that kiss was definitely gay. And very intentionally so. You should watch the commentary with Lucy and Renee for this episode. They pick up on the stuff you picked up on too. That it is gay. RENEE: “I said MAN, right?” Xena didn’t save Callisto because Gabrielle didn’t want her to. When Gabrielle said “Get her Xena!”, she took that to mean she wanted her dead. Xena will kill for Gabrielle. But it’s how it happened that’s the really interesting part because don’t think for a second that that won’t come back at her. That it won’t torment her. Or that they won. Callisto is there to serve as the embodiment of Xena’s guilt after all. That’s her purpose in the narrative. And they work with that as much as they possibly can. That’s why Callisto is SO GOOD. This show isn’t heroes vs villains. It’s all morally grey and that’s why I love it so fucking much. I mean right from the off you have a morally grey lead character. And now you’re having situations where the other lead character is turning morally grey. This show works best that way. Xena is always at its best when it’s in the grey. When nothing is clear. All is ambiguous. And you have to interpret for yourself what things mean. They give you the room to do it. When they try to force the narrative and make it into something specific, that’s when it fails to have any real impact on its watcher. And believe me - they’re very wavy on which it should be all throughout. It’s intentional.

Love how much you're understanding the heart of the show (Xena & Gabrielle) that you're able to straight up guess poor sweet perdicus had to die. So much one could say about this episode and these characters' psychology and what they represent. How Callisto serves as an embodiment of Xena's guilt and what that means for her killing perdicus. How gabrielle is Xena's redemption and what her descent into blood rage would mean for Xena. So much you could take from this episode. I too was shocked Xena killed/didnt save Callisto, but I think she did it for gabrielle and to preserve her innocence. She knew gabrielle was filled with rage and wouldn't stop, so she took on that burden. Also I agree with the multishipping! Love Callisto.

Renee O'Connor is top of the line here. ... Sora Miyano dropped her own Xena reaction earlier today (2x1), so this is a lot of Xena this Saturday. 😁
